Phillies looking at Moyer alternatives

The Phillies want Jamie Moyer back, but as contract negotiations move slowly, they are looking at alternatives. The Boston Globe reported yesterday that the Phillies had made an offer to free-agent righthander Derek Lowe. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. would not confirm or deny the report, but a source said yesterday that the Phillies had not made Lowe an official offer. It is likely that parameters have been discussed. The Phils also have talked with free-agent righthander A.J. Burnett, although the Atlanta Braves reportedly are prepared to offer him a five-year contract.

I doubt Lowe would take the 3/24M that we offer pitchers.

The braves are stacking up if they get burnett. With Vazquez there now. Im not scared thou. Bring back the dinosaur. He did amazing the whole season and part of the reason that the phillies won the chip.

Does Moyer have to defer his Social Security at this point?

lol....
you really think in a non-contract year (next year) that
Burnett will be healthy ???

Moyer's options are limited to the National League. He would get absolutely crushed if he signed with an American League team, especially a team in the East. Moyer is a class act but I can't see him playing hardball with the Phillies.

December 5, 2008  09:38 AM ET

How about Terry Mulholland???

December 5, 2008  09:41 AM ET

Wow....a T&R about the World Champs and not the Yankees, Angels, or Red Sox. Thanks guys, you shouldn't have!

Yankees fans are everywhere. You go to Angels Vs. Yankees... there are more Yankees fans in attendance. And the Dodgers... please, what a joke of an organization. You wish... wish you had Joba!

Ortiz says A-Rod will play for D.R. in WBC per ESPN

This guy is a total @zz

December 5, 2008  04:24 PM ET

Why do the Phils care so much about resigning Moyer? They act like he actually did something for them last year. Go Braves. and for anyone who says he pitched a good game in the World Series, that's one good game. The guy is 46 years old. The only reason he got 16 wins last year was due to the Phils amazing offense.

um, look at some of his stats and then reconsider your claim:

his WHIP was 1.33 -- better than his 04, 05, and 07 numbers -- he was tied with Edison Volquez and just .01 less than Dice-K
his K/BB was the best in 3 years at 1.98
BABIP was just below .300, which means hitters were a tad unlucky, but not much.
77% of baserunners stranded (that's him and his defense, which will be largely the same)

Key stat -- his groundball %age increased to 43% (up from 39).

He's definitely not going to be pretty all the time, but I think he's worth another year at least. he's a good #4 who won't get hurt and pitched 196 innings last year. when you don't know what Kendrick or even Meyers will do, having Moyer is reassuring and probably a safer bet than Burnett who is fragile.

Jamie Moyer had a good saeson last year and he led his team to the World Series and won at the age of 45. If he won't sign with a team, it's time to retire and enjoy winning the World Series. You always end your career on a good note and hope that you can get into the Hall Of Fame. He is going to leave a hole in the rotation but he had a long a good career and I think it's time to call it quits or sign with the Braves who are really looking to rebuild the rotation because they need to get a division streak going again like they did for fourteen years in the 1990s and early 2000s. They are looking to pursue A.J. Burnett and have already traded for Javier Vazquez. Moyer will be a great fit for them and they can replace a terrible rotation that stunk last year.

December 5, 2008  06:26 PM ET

Long live ex- Cub pitchers !!! Moyer and Maddux. Hell, get Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina and tear up the senior circuit ! LOL !!!

December 5, 2008  08:44 PM ET

Now if Mussina would just learn to pitch more like Moyer ...

December 8, 2008  10:06 PM ET

Moyer is a keeper for the Phils. He gave his all for them - they should reciprocate.

Retire or go to the Braves? Why would you leave the team you won the world series with to go to the Braves? The Braves can have Burnett for 5 years/ 140million. He wont be healthy for 3.5 of them years. As for them going on another big winning streak like they did through the 90s and all...KEEP DREAMING. I don't think they will start that streak anytime soon.
