A's consider signing Big Unit

You may have seen a piece from Fox Sport's Ken Rosenthal, saying the A's are interested in free agent lefty Randy Johnson. I got in touch with one of Johnson's agents, Alan Nero, who confirmed the two sides have spoken as recently as this week. "The calls have been quite informal right now," Nero said. "Barry (Meister, who represents Johnson along with Nero) and I are going to the winter meetings. Hopefully we'll sit down (with the A's) and see if there's something more substantive." He added that the A's are one of about five or six teams showing the same degree of interest at this point. Going after Johnson makes a lot of sense to me. With all the attention paid to the A's efforts to add hitters (and Rosenthal thinks they're still front runners for Rafael Furcal), don't forget that their starting rotation needs some shoring up. Right now I'd pencil in Justin Duchscherer, Sean Gallagher, Dana Eveland and Gio Gonzalez as starters, but all come with question marks because of health concerns and/or inexperience. There's some young studs knocking on the major league door, but how soon will they be ready? The Big Unit would certainly fill a need as a reliable veteran starter. Yes he's 45, but his numbers from last season were very solid. He's a local guy - born in Walnut Creek, graduated from Livermore High - which could make the A's a nice place for him to finish his career. He's just five wins shy of 300 and would give the team some marketing muscle as well.

Let him end his career in Seattle with Jr.

no kidding. this guy can only succeed in a controlled environment.

I really wish Johsnon would retire. He's pathetc. Every pitch thrown by him, Glavine, Greg Maddux or Kenny Rogers justs makes me respect Mussina even more.

Randy's still around huh? I had him pegged for hangin' next to Ted Williams in that cryogenic lab.

I'm sure he'd pitch alright in Oakland seeing as it's a pitcher friendly park. But I'm not sure the A's are the right place for him. Although he'd be a good guy to have around for all of the young pitchers the A's have. As always with Oakland, it comes down to what it will cost.

He's got to play one more season - he's only what - 8 wins from 300?

It would boost attendance once he gets to win #299 with fans buying up tickets to witness him reaching 300 wins. Depending on how many extra tickets that would sell it might even pay for Johnson if they give him a 1 year deal.

The A`s um maybe not.

I knew I'd see you here. Nobody considers big units more than GO9.

My favorite thing about the A's is watching which washed up star they go after in the off-season. Frank Thomas, Mike Piazza... the Big Unit.. SWEET! I cant wait to see Giambi and Damon back in Oakland.

Bonds will be in an A's uniform once his legal troubles are over.

Is it within the allowed distance from his home so that his ankle bracelet won't go off?

he'll be home shopping in Oakland. or, perhaps he'll be living out of his car so as long as he drives to work he'll be ok.

the feds keep dropping charges against bonds....they won't have much left so we'll see what happens.

Maybe we can get Willy Mays to button up a uniform and take a walk to the elephant's graveyard in Oakland...

We all know what Johnson is.

December 5, 2008  11:02 AM ET

Is Billy Beane high again? They give away Rich Harden, Dan Haren and Chad Gaudin and they want Randy "social security" Johnson? Somebody get the A's a GM righ away.

December 5, 2008  11:26 AM ET

I read that Beane is a grassroots advocate for coffee enemas.
