Washington to hire USC's Sarkisian

Steve Sarkisian and the Washington Huskies wanted to wait a few more days to make their marriage official.

But a search that began Oct. 27 when it was announced that Tyrone Willingham would not be back next season culminated Thursday when the Huskies decided to offer their head football coaching position to Sarkisian, an assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at USC.

The Huskies may make it official at a news conference on Sunday, said a well-placed source.

Sarkisian denied he had accepted the offer, but an L.A. source said that appears to be a formality. Sarkisian apparently told the Huskies he did not want to do anything official until after the UCLA game.

"I have interviewed with Washington," Sarkisian told reporters in Los Angeles. "They've interviewed a lot of people. I'm one of a number of candidates, which I'm honored to be. Nothing is finalized in any way, shape or form."

Good luck Steve

Interesting how Norm Chow can't get a head coaching job after the championship years but the two younger white guys have no trouble getting them without Championships. And someone said age and ethnic background do not matter.

Oh yeah, nobody in the U.S. thinks that Asians are capable...It can't be because he's Mormon. Over 60% of Americans therefore think he's a polygamist.

I'm not a UW fan at all but saying the following is unfounded and uninformed about Washington:
" Yep sounds to me like a b/s hiring i didn't see them go for not a single proven guy or a minority thats way better qualified"

I think UW is the only DI school in the country that had an African American head basketball and football coach concurrently. They did interview the offensive coordinator from Notre Dame was is a minority candidate. As much as I typically dislike UW they are one of the most equal opportunity schools in the country.

Actually sooner1949 you're incorrect. The University of Kentucky Football program pursued Norm Chow several years ago and he wasn't interested. It was probably a prudent decision on Norm's part because UK is a perennial loser in the SEC and becauce the SEC is the toughest football conference in country. Please check your facts next time before shooting off you mouth and making specious charges.

Sweet. Maybe now we can bring someone in who doesn't call predictable plays.

Actually, you're the one who needs to check your facts. The SEC is not the toughest football conference in the country...maybe last year, but this is 2008.

This year, of the six BCS conferences, the SEC had the worst record in games against teams from other BCS conferences. The ACC was by far the best:

ACC - 15-8 (6-4 against the SEC)
Big East - 8-8
Big 12 - 6-7
Big Ten - 6-7
Pac-10 - 6-8
SEC - 6-9

Two great teams...not much else.

In the last two regular seasons, the ACC has 14 ROAD wins against other BCS conference teams. Over the same period, the SEC has 13 TOTAL wins against other BCS conference teams.

He's not White, he's Armenian, which is middle eastern (right next to Turkey, Iraq etc.). No racial factor involved.

Can't believe both Tennessee and UW rushed to hire these ex USC OC's when they carry enough clout to attract candidates with real credentials. As a UCLA fan, I'm sorry to see Sark leave because I think his awful play calling cripples SC's offense. I can't see either of those guys being successful at their respective jobs.

Get ready to see the "Pete Carroll Coaching Tree" fail miserably

UW wants to hire a younger coach who will be around for more than a few seasons. They want to end the coaching carousel that has been going on since the old AD fired Neuheisel. Sarkisian's background at USC (he's a great recruiter and his offense has put a LOT of players in the NFL) will help UW get back on the map in the PAC-10. He comes from a program that knows how to win and has been successful for 7 years straight. I think this is a great hire by UW and hopefully we can get back to the days of at least being competitive in the conference and going to decent bowl games. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be able to win the PAC-10 until Carroll retires or decides to give the NFL another shot.

You hope. He stinks as a OC. He'll attract QBs and WRs but little else. Think Texas Tech. They'll be a throw first/run as a last resort-type team. He and Kiffin got jobs before some assistant coaches that have been coaching since before they were born. Unbelievable. "It's not what you know, it's who you know..."

BTW, Bill Plaschke's story in today's L.A. Times' Sports section is right on in regards to SC and the absence of Norm Chow.

ehood, he wasn't trying to make a point about which conference is the strongest. He was trying to say the Norm Chow wasn't interested in Kentucky because they're usually at the bottom of the conference.

December 5, 2008  02:41 PM ET

Let's see, Sarkisian was a winner at BYU and a winner at USC, but he doesn't deserve a chance at UW. Give me a break! He's a class act and you guys are a bunch of uneducated (easy to tell by your posts) whiners!

December 5, 2008  02:44 PM ET

Buffalo has a black FB coach (Turner Gill from Nebraska) black BB coach, and a black AD. That trifecta is unique in the country.

Gill will be moving on though, becasue someone is going to wave 750K to a million at him and the state won't go higher than 200K for the coach's position.
