Notre Dame AD sets Weis' goal

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick labeled a 6-6 campaign in 2008 "unacceptable" after the decision to retain Weis. Then Charlie Weis clearly defined where that bar of acceptability rests for 2009. "It's important that you're moving toward the BCS discussion," Weis said. "I don't think you can be just a mediocre football team at Notre Dame. I'm not saying you're playing in the national championship game every year -- but you have to be in the discussion. "If you're not in the discussion, I don't think that's what anyone who went to Notre Dame or roots for Notre Dame would ever be looking for."

wow, he wont last long then..

December 6, 2008  09:26 AM ET

Charlie is keeping the seat warm for a year for Urban Meyer, who after winning another national title in January, will have enough ridiculous ego to believe he can turn ND around. Weis will be signing a handful of autographs in Central and Northern New Jersey shopping malls for income, and handing out resumes to New Jersey High School athletic directors by February, 2010.

it's funny how ND's recruiting class is always right at the top
yet their team has been mediocre the last few years

December 6, 2008  09:55 AM ET

Whether you love or hate ND, this a very difficult position. Is Charlie a good fit for the job? Regardless what I think, ND is going to play the hand that they dealt themselves. ND is not playing this close to the vest. No conference, fine. We'll play for BCS recognition. Every year ND is mentioned for BCS potential, by fans and alums, they have not really been BCS caliber for quite a while. Under the Golden Dome is a myth, painful and real. No myth here.

If CW succeeds next year, does he get another 10 year guaranteed extension??

December 6, 2008  10:11 AM ET

The ND faithful deserve a higher standard than 6-6 standard.... 6-6 USED to be a failure for ND, this is a shame...

December 6, 2008  10:19 AM ET

a difficult position is correct......to make a BCS run w/ the academic requirements of Stanford
and Duke won't work in football......Meyer won't come to ND w/ these strict requirements.
At Florida he can pursue any football player who can spell his name....the Gators ,Trojans and
Sooners can build alot of depth at every position w/ Basket Weaving 101 classes...it will take a miracle to get ND back in the BCS

December 6, 2008  10:21 AM ET

oh fun and joy ... another CW article

December 6, 2008  10:33 AM ET

Best case scenario, they win 8 games next year.

December 6, 2008  10:38 AM ET

It is becoming so obviously about money. The powers at ND will be thrilled to take the extra $10MIL or so for any of the BCS bowls. The NC has become, for all practical purposes, unattainable, and I don't think they care. They will just water down the schedule to a point that equals BCS.
I am a diehard Tider (we take oceans of money as a granted), but even I have to admit that the ND "brand" is unique to college football. Why else would I waste my time reading blogs about a failing program?

Right on target Bim...!

December 6, 2008  11:05 AM ET

he was kept aboard to keep his recruit commitments..Has had stellar recruitment classes since he has been at the helm..The syracuse loss without a doubt seeled his fate to think of bein worst than the orangemen is unfathomable not to mention he is not well liked by alumni..seems to not have what it takes to develope young talent..Will be out by this time next year.

December 6, 2008  11:22 AM ET

ND no longer gets the full 17 million if they ever get back to a BCS game. They get 1.2 million every year regardless if they go or not and about 4.5 million if they do go. This became the payout schedule when the BCS championship game was added. More ammo for you haters simce ND gets paid even if they don't go to a bowl game!!!

December 6, 2008  11:30 AM ET

sure is strange how u can fire willingham yet let wies stay on......

December 6, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Sorry...since they get paid... Nice, f- up my first post!!

December 6, 2008  11:33 AM ET

Good luck with BOTH Washington schools on the schedule. Their next-year's schedule is more embarassing than retaining CW.

Both coaches were & ARE failures....period-
weis has been given more slack because of his large $$$ and
his successful past NFL winning & ties to the NFL

Ty had no past winning track record

December 6, 2008  12:00 PM ET

seriuosly, would we even be talking about this if the team had'nt given up against Syracuse, UNC, and PITT? I watched those games and it wasnt the coaching staff that gave up it was the team. Weis isnt a bad coach. It seems more that he's a bad motivator. If they had'nt lost those games THE IRISH would be 9-3 and there would'nt be a controversy.

These ND faitful you speak of, are they the snowball throwing, booing players, hating coaches, death threat sending people? Proud of you little leprachons. Your days of being a powerhouse in college football are done. Texas bowl playing Rice, wow. Get used to it Irish Pukes, loving every minute of it.

This just another reason why there are so many ND haters. ND thinks they are so much better than everyone else. Enjoy the past, the future is gloomy for the whitetrash
