Three Wolverines may not return

Tailback Sam McGuffie may be on his way out of Michigan football with a few other players potentially joining him. Though coach Rich Rodriguez said he and McGuffie still have to meet again to discuss it, the prospects did not sound promising. "We have several concerns," Rodriguez said. "Obviously, Sam has concerns at home (in Texas), we have concerns because he's had multiple concussions, three of them. So there are concerns there. ..." McGuffie is finishing his semester at Michigan but did not attend the football awards banquet this week, weighing his prospects. Rodriguez confirmed a few more absences from the bust, indicating he was told tight end/defensive end Carson Butler is exploring his options for the NFL draft and tailback Avery Horn is considering transferring. Rodriguez, who attended Saturday's U-M/Duke basketball game at Crisler Arena and spoke with reporters during halftime, said he is still evaluating his staff and has no timetable for a decision on their status. Defensive end Brandon Graham was sitting with the recruits -- this was a big recruiting weekend for the football team -- and Rodriguez said he expects Graham to return.

Sad to hear about McGuffie but odds are he's gone and his main concern right now is his family and health.

But more importantly, HOW BOUT THAT UM BASKETBALL TEAM!

The two biggest upsets so far this year all are courtesy of the U of M Wolverines with wins over UCLA and Duke. And to think that Duke just beat Michigan and to have UM come have the opportunity to play Duke again and soundly beat them is just an amazing achievement for this once rudderless team. This win now give UM the opportunity to go to the big dance. It's theirs to lose now. And with Laval Lucas-Perry soon to be part of the team in two weeks, UM will have another guy who can take it to the basket and score.

yeah its too bad mcguffie took such a beating this season. I wish the best for him but this is all old news. I'm sure some OSUers have been living under a rock and havent heard any of this yet and will be chiming in their two cents any moment now. 3....2....1..... And the dbag OSU fan is....

That SOB will not be happy untell he wrecks the MICHIGAN football program. He tell the MICHIGAN football fans to get a life, will that SOB should packup and go home back to WV.

I don't give a rats ash about Mich... Or Rodriguez... But I gotta admit... Watching all this go down from the other side of the country... Is damn intriguing

It would really hurt if we lost Graham, but the other three can do whatever...no big deal. If they are not on board with the system, gotta get them out of there anyways.

After what Beilein has done in two years, i am gonna give RR another year before i criticize him for his wacky tactics.
UM has indeed turned into a basketball school this season. We're going dancing March '09 baby!

Are you insane or just pretending to be? McGuffie is a stud and would be an enormous loss for any team.

Sorry to disappoint, Driver, but I'm actually wanting the best for Michigan...I'm a Purdue undergrad and OSU grad school graduate so maybe the rivalry thing doesn't burn in my blood as much as with others, but it's in all our best interests for Michigan to get back to what it can be.

And Warden, OSU did okay too...beating ranked ND I believe. Good luck!

Yeah he's good, but there are plenty of other kids who are just as good and ready to play, let's see what someone else can do(UM does not get hung up on individual players, this a machine). Kind of like how there are plenty of other coaches ready to coach ND, let's see what someone else can do. He's just one player.

Rockhound, the OSU win was another big win for the big ten. All of a sudden, Im getting excited for this Bball season, MSU and Purdue need to get it together

We were told that RichRod would recruit the players he needed to run his offense. How can we believe this if he cannot even keep the talent he has?

Has RichRod made the worst start of any coach in Michigan history?

December 7, 2008  03:44 PM ET

It's amazing that players wouldn't want to stick with an incompetent megalomaniac who will lead their school to a string of 3-8 and 6-7 seasons until the school finally fires him and starts over again. But enough about Charlie Weis.

If he's had three reported concussions then I really can't see his stock being that high. NFL teams will safely assume he's had more than the three concussions, and that he's also prone to these concussions. Each time you have a concussion, it's easier to get one the next time to take a good hit. And the NFL is a lot more dangerous than college. Unless you're playing Detroit.

dude, i think it is taboo to make fun of the lions by now

I guess we have RR excuses for the upcoming season.

December 8, 2008  10:33 AM ET

My question is: Why just 3?

December 8, 2008  10:53 AM ET

I've had some concussions before, and I think actually my head is deaden more to it now. There are some that it is easier to get them (Lindros, Tasker), but for some people it's a one off and your head gets tough. I berllbee deruh am fine.

How's your paper route going? LOL

why in god's name is UM not ranked in Bball this week?

QUOTE(#17):

Because one good win doesn't make the season, especially when the win comes during the first few weeks of the season. B Ball polls don't change as quickly as the football polls, the season is much longer.

A good sign is that their RPI rating is #20. Bodes well for the tourney if UM can stay healthy they have a shot.

To make the tournament . . . NOT win it.
