USC's next offensive coordinator...

John Morton, the Trojans' receivers coach and passing game coordinator, is the front-runner to replace Sarkisian, Coach Pete Carroll said. Sarkisian also served as quarterbacks coach, so Carroll said he would look at options to add a replacement to the staff. Carl Smith, who coached quarterbacks for the Trojans during their 2004 national championship season and most recently worked as offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, would be the front-runner for the job.

Pete just wants puppets, that's why Norm Chow hit the road and the truth is Kif and Sark both stink as coaches. Al Davis learned that, the Vols will learn that and Washington probably won't learn it until about 2020 when the "Ty's Recruits" excuse expires.

December 7, 2008  04:18 PM ET

Puppets? What?

December 7, 2008  08:09 PM ET

hell, ill be a puppet for PC

December 7, 2008  11:23 PM ET

There is a reason that USC hasn't played for the national championship since Norm Chow left. Carroll's ego precludes Chow's return, on both sides.

It will be interesting to see how Carroll's newest protege fares. Fifth in the BCS at best unless Carl Smith can help Sanchez become a top five quarterback, Sarkisian couldn't.

is this the same john(nie) morton who played at usc and in the nfl for years?

It can be argued that USC deserves a shot at this title game this season. One loss, just like every other team in contention.

This season would be perfect for a playoff. You have 2 undefeated teams that deserve to prove they are that good, Penn St and USC who both lost to a team they were better than, but lack that huge win. Texas Tech who had an aweful outing vs Oklahoma but beat Texas. Texas who beat Oklahoma, but lost to Texas Tech.

I personally think the BCS got it wrong on the selections this season. With this many 1 loss teams, you need to look at the quality of loss.

Florida lost to a good, but certainly not great Ole Miss team.

Oklahoma lost to a Great Texas team.

Texas lost to a very good Texas Tech team.

Alabama lost to a Great Florida team.

Penn St lost to a decent Iowa team.

I would rank the 1 loss teams as follows.

1) Oklahoma

2) Texas

3) USC

4) Florida

5) Alabama

6) Penn St

7) Texas Tech

The reason I don't think Florida deserves the spot in the title game is they did not lose to a team the same caliber of the team Texas, Oklahoma or Texas Tech beat. Texas Tech drops because of the way they lost to Oklahoma.

I think USC's loss to Oregon St is a better loss, if there is such a thing, than Florida's home loss to Ole Miss. USC was on the road and made it a close game in the second half after getting behind big early.

Paris Hilton - it will make about that much difference

Sark doesn't seem to be getting the performance out of the potential of this group.. .Time will tell.

By your argument, why don't you have BAMA as #2?

It's always interesting to see people bag on PC. Other than the fact that it's USC and I understand why people hold disdain for SC, what's not to like about Pete? Who wouldn't want to play for a coach like him?

\waiting for intelligent responses\

I never liked their play calling, but I will wish them luck anyways!

John Morton (not the ex WR) or Carl Smith whoever PC chooses will be a great addition to the offense.

Fight On!

December 8, 2008  02:57 PM ET

Sarkisian is to conservative in his play calling. Sanchez has one of the best arms out there and has the ability to score a lot of points. Sarkisian likes to rotate his running backs but this does not let SC's running backs get into a groove to make big plays. If SC wants to rotate backs then rotate one or two, not four or five. I believe with Sarkisian gone, SC can become a high scoring team once again!

For the record, mine wasn't a bag. The Trojan offense is a machine that even Paris could operate. The benefit being she's available for Sanchez to work the deep ball with her.

Bama had the misfortunte to lose their last game (like it or not it IS a factor) and to fail to win their conference.

I understand your question but, losing late is always gonna sting...

Texas failed to win their conference and, by your analysis, had a lower quality win.

Not banging, just asking.

Yup. And that's why they are on the outside looking in. Their NC chances were basically cooked over TGiving (when they didn't get into the Big 12 Title Game).

Now it WOULD have been interesting had Mizzou won on Sat. THAT would have really been a mess. UT, USC and probably Utah and PSU would have all been yapping.

I could understand the UT USC yapping, but PSU and Utah would be yapping to hear themselves. I think BAMA would have a better argument.
