05:30 AM ET 12.08 | The Tigers have acquired catcher Gerald Laird from the Rangers in exchange for Double-A pitcher Guillermo Moscoso and a second prospect, SI.com has learned. Laird, 29, is regarded as a good defensive catcher and hit .276 with six homers and 41 RBIs in 96 games last season. Moscoso, 25, struck out 122 in 86 2/3 innings this season between Class A Lakeland and Double-A Erie.

now the redsox can sign salty!

The Tigers MAY want to keep some players on the farm team. I hate that they are depleting their farm teams again

They did need a catcher very badly. What were they supposed to do? The free agent catchers are very unattractive.

December 8, 2008  08:00 AM ET

Good move. Now on to shortstop....

Finally some action one less name to read about everyday.

I would normally agree. But this is hardle the Jurrjens trade a year ago. Plus, you're right we need to be bringing up some young pitching prospects this year, and that means we need a rock behind the plate.

Our defense is already looking better than last year. Now lets finish the offseason strong. Sign a O. Cabrera or Eckstein cheap, and trade our some of our crowded outfield prospects / Larish for Putz. Other than that, focus on developing the young guys...

I'm ok with this. I never even heard of Guillermo Moscoso anyway. I think Laird is pretty solid.

Larish for Putz.

Larish for anyone. I do not understand what the Tigers see in this guy.

Yeah, we're set at 1st/3rd, and we dont really need slugging...

Meh. I was hoping for more for Laird, but maybe this will work out. Salty can go to the Red Sox, but they will need to cough up Buchholz to start, plus 1-2 other guys to complete the Littleton deal.

I dunno. It'll be interesting.

While Laird certainly doesn't have the offensive promise that Salty does, he's clearly established himself as a solid starting MLB catcher (something Salty has yet to do). I wouldn't expect the Rangers to get much more for Salty then they got for Laird.

I'd think Bowden would be the main guy and then 1 lesser prospect.

December 8, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Thats BS!!! We give up a good catcher for more prospects. This really chaps my ****. I thought he was getting a MLB ready pitcher to start in April. Jon Daniels needs to be fired tomorrow!!!!

Why would the Rangers trade Salty now?? .... doesn't he pretty much have the starting job by default at Texas?

Not with Teagarden and Ramirez on the team.

December 8, 2008  10:43 AM ET

So where does Inge play again?

December 8, 2008  10:50 AM ET

Dude calls a brutal game

December 8, 2008  11:31 AM ET

Jon Daniels continues to make bad trades. The two guys we get aren't in minorleaguebaseball.com's top 20+ prospects from Detroit. At least Baseball America has Moscoso listed as the number 10 prospect. Laird is too good at a tough position to get so little in return. Detroit fleeces us again.

December 8, 2008  11:34 AM ET

I think this is a good move on both ends. The Rangers get a decent pitching prospect (of which they lack) and the Tigers get an all-around solid catcher without spending large dollars on an unnecessary free agent.

And as a Red Sox fan, this helps us because this trade may be the gateway to Boston acquiring Salty/Teagarden. I approve.

I agree.

I think it sets the market for what the Rangers can expect to get for their catchers.

Exactly. And if this trade is indeed that indicator, the Sox may be able to get Salty without having to give up Masterson, Buchholz, or Bowden.

They did not get much, this is typical Rangers moves. The market for trading with the Rangers has been set over the last decade. Give them garbage and take what you want...
