'Bama commit wants to hear from Gators

Douglass linebacker Jonathan Atchison said that it is doubtful he will meet with Florida assistant coach Charlie Strong. "He hasn't called, so I doubt it is going to happen," the 6-foot-3, 212-pound member of the AJC's The Georgia 150 said late Sunday. However, if Strong shows up at Douglass on Monday, which was the original plan, then Atchison said he would likely hear what Florida had to say. Atchison recently switched his commitment to Alabama from Auburn after the resignation of Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville. Atchison made the change after having a lengthy conversation with Alabama coach Nick Saban.

Charlie Strong will make a great head coach one day. Someone needs to give him a shot

December 8, 2008  10:00 AM ET

WE DON"T WANT YOU!!!!

Commit(?) to Auburn - oops, ok I get it, Tubs is gone so look for something else.
Commit(?) to BAMA - but wait, let me see who else might think I'm pretty 48hrs later

We don't need that

December 8, 2008  10:25 AM ET

Baitor,
Are you kidding me? Of course you want this kid. It would be worth Strong's time to make a phone call.

No, sounds like his ego is as big as his game.
Does he sound like a good off court/locker room find?
No, let him go to Rollins, lol.

Not kidding. We have 2 other outside linebackers lined up that are studs and local. I don't like guys who flip their "commitments" like this. I know it happens every day, but in the span of less 48 hrs he has been commited to 2 schools and begging another. I am for an early signing period to end the nonsense.

The DC to Auburn makes sense. Commits place a lot of emphasis on the head coach. And really who KNOWS who he would be playing for??

December 8, 2008  11:12 AM ET

Baitor,
I hear what you are saying, he is kind of a premadonna maybe, but this kid is a stud and he is going to sign with you conference rival. Even if he isnt going to be a starter for FL, you dont want Bama to get him...

We have the choice of having two studs who are local and want to play for the gators, or replacing one with a stud who doesn't know who he wants to play for. When it is crunch time (like the 4th qtr Saturday), I'll take the truly committed type.

December 8, 2008  01:30 PM ET

This kid has no clue where he wants to play not go to school all he wants is to get to the NFL after a couple of years

December 8, 2008  03:03 PM ET

The kid is not even rated in the top 20 outside linebackers in the country...maybe if he were, he would have heard from the gators by now. I don't know why alabama is willing to take him on (other than to stick it to auburn). My advice to middle of the road players like him trying to get a scholly to an upper level SEC school...commit early and shut your mouth...otherwise, they'll find someone else they like better and you'll be playing in the ACC.

Yeah! who does he think he is changing which University he wants to--in one way or another-- pay to attend. When making life decisions, there is no excuse in changing your mind to understand all your options. This kid needs to get it together!! Damns!

Its one thing to weigh your options, is another to do what a lot of these kids do these days-- keep changing their minds so they can keep the ridiculous media attention they receive on them all the way to signing day. They'll go on TV and announce one school, then go on radio the next week and announce another (or in this case...announce, then imply that they are still looking). Since this is happening so much now, coaches keep recruiting kids who have already committed to other schools. They also have to keep recruiting their own commits. It's all a disaster and something (like an early signing period) should be done to stop it.

Stealing? More like providing shelter from the Auburn sheet storm

December 8, 2008  04:16 PM ET

Makes sense for the kid to listen if Florida comes calling.

Ohhh, I was under the impression that he was a blue chipper

He's not a tool, by all accounts he is a pretty good linebacker, but UF already has backers lined up that are as good or better and do not appear to be the waffling type. No need to go after something that isn't better than what you already have and if my count is correct, the gators only have 20-21 slots this year.
