The Mets appeared to be closing in early Tuesday on a deal to bring star free-agent closer Francisco Rodriguez to New York. The deal, expected to be completed very soon, is likely to be for three years and about $37 million, according to people familiar with the discussions. The Mets came to the winter meetings aiming to solve their closer problem, and K-Rod was their top choice. After opening with an offer of about $24 million over two years plus a vesting option for a third year, the gap was closed when the Mets agreed to guarantee the third year.

Oh they gonna sign him, but the question is.... Is it a little too late? Probably not, the Mets should win the World Series with this playa.

Its about time that Omar did SOMETHING!!! Now what about the rest of the pitching staff??? Come on Omar earn your salary. Dont just make one deal and put your head back in the sand. The Mets need to replace some of their starters.

Dude cool your jets, its only december, and the mets are not the only team not making moves. Omar knows what he is doing, you on the other hand have no idea of what's going on aparently.

Isn't that what all you MUTS fans said last year when you signed Johan Santana?

Soo true, & since he's overrated i see him choking when it matters.

Before you go off on me about him being overrated, for somebody who just set the record for saves he has very little interest among baseball teams. Considering his resume and age you'd think everybody would clamoring for this "real deal." I think it's laughable that he only got three guaranteed years. That's a joke.

Getting this guy to agree to 3-years is a very nice move.

Santana is one of the three best pitchers in the NL, you dolt. He would have easily won the Cy this past season if his team had been able to hold the leads he had going into the late innings. How do you solve that? Get an ace closer, dummy.

good move for them.

I'm still having a hard time believing he is signing so low. Didn't he turn down almost the same offer from the Angels last spring training. I'm thinking we are probably better off now I won't have to sweat through 3 outs in close games that will be up to Mets fans now.

December 9, 2008  11:22 AM ET

At 12/3 that is not so bad, and the Mets really need him or someone close to the top of the closer food chain.

How good do you think he really is?

December 9, 2008  01:51 PM ET

It would be a good move for the mets. Can't be any worse than what they already have. Unless he follows Wagner's example. But still not good enough to knock off the World Champs!

December 9, 2008  01:52 PM ET

i think it will be very interesting to see how KRod does with the pressure in NY. I don't think this guy is that good.

December 9, 2008  03:19 PM ET

Mets always seem to sign guys after they have a memorable season and then never come through. Beltran was amazing for the astros now hes ok, same went for pedro johan was good for them but not as good as everyone thought, moises alou another questionable deal for the mets to be good they need to get rid of the front office.

December 9, 2008  04:29 PM ET

It's a little odd that the Angels made no attempt after the season to sign K-Rod. The guy saved 62 games!!! I think the Angels saw what everyone else did in the playoffs, mid-range fastball and a slider that rarely gets a called strike. Batters sat on the offspeed pitch and raked it.

Enjoy New York. K-Rod.

As an Angels fan I can only say good riddance! Mets fans will be booing K-Rod 1 month into the season. He is done! Most overrated player in MLB. Thanks for taking him off our hands. My prediction 32 saves and 17 blown saves this year. Money well spent Omar.

Wow, bitter much?? Look, the Mets are signing him for reportedly just $1m more per year than what the Angels offered him. That tells me that your team still saw value in him. Besides, the Mets blew 29 saves last year as a team and only finished 3 games out of 1st in the NL East. He doesn't have to set records or dominate, just be solid and close at a respectable rate.

December 9, 2008  08:31 PM ET

That collective silence is the sound of Angel fans shrugging their shoulders.

No big deal. He was a goner the minute he passed on the 3 year/$33 mil in spring training.

The owner knew it, the players knew it, the fans knew it.

For the record: Arredondo gets more saves than K-Rod next year.

MUTS???? That's clever.....don't be upset because we fixed one of the main issues...don't be upset because experts have picked the mets to win the division....our bullpen was the reason we did not make the playoffs, that immediately changes with K-Rod....enjoy your 08 championship....oh yeah.....Mr. Met will kick the Philly Phanatics A!@
