Yankees want Sabathia more than ever

After two sit-downs with CC Sabathia, the Yankees are more smitten than ever, although Sabathia left town Monday without a commitment. That is fine with the Yankees, who also met Monday with Sabathia's Milwaukee Brewers teammate, Ben Sheets, and planned to meet with the agent Scott Boras about Derek Lowe. The Yankees like Sheets, who started the All-Star Game in New York last July but finished the season with a muscle tear near his elbow. They also like Lowe, a proven postseason performer. But Sabathia stands out among his peers, and the Yankees will be patient as he makes his decision.

CC is totaly using the Yankees to drive up his value while ending up in the NL playing in the Bay area. its not that difficult. if he wanted to play for the yankees he would've had his pen ready on the first day of free agency. The yanks do need to get Sheets, he wont cost that much, but I"m sure that he will put up good numbers for the Bombers. I would stay away from Lowe, since having him and all the ground balls he induces will make Jeter look more pathetic defensively than he already is.

i agree with everything except the part about C.C. "having his pen ready the first day"

what does he have to gain from that? he knows the yanks need him badly and the yanks have already said they will go higher than the 140 mil, so why not wait if you are C.C. - he has nothing to lose and everything to gain by waiting

I agree with you on everything except Jeters sub par defense

I don't think we're going to get him. You gotta wonder, though, if Joe Torre was still here, if he could have had an influence over CC's decision. As it looks now, Joe is probably going to have the only two players I wanted to have, CC and Manny. Tex is going to stay with the Angels, but even if he doesn't I doubt he'll play for the Yankees. C'est la vie, on with the yout movement!

December 9, 2008  09:00 AM ET

i bet he goes to LA which i'll laugh at. the yankees are the rich b3tch wh3re in high school that gets everything she wants cuz she has money. anytime the yankees miss out on somebody cuz they dont' want JUST loads of cash...it's nice for MLB. looks alot like CC is just using the yanks, as said, to get more money.

his value has already been set-
it is up to a west coast team to 'apporach' the Yankee
standing offer....
if they do & he goes elsewhere- so be it

I thnk in the end- he'll come-
for the 20-30 mil he would be 'losing' by not taking the
Yankees deal- he could move his family to NY 20x over
or fly them in every weekend.

in the end- business is business

You come off like a dull-witted dick chomper for the most part, but if CC would make this decision based on his heart and not his wallet it would be refreshing and good for baseball, regardless of which team offered him the big dollars.

I hope you're right, but it doesn't seem to add up. He's got more money on the table right now than anyone else will ever offer him and he's not scooping it up. There's gotta be a reason for that, and using the Yankees to drive up the price on offers from teams that are more attractive to him, for whatever reasons, sounds about right.

Off the subject:

I watch a re-broadcast of game 6 1977 WS (Yanks & Dodgers). Those guys were so small. Reggie was a big guy back then and today's players would make him look like a little guy.

Another thing that stood out were the salaries back then Reggie and Munson were making 330K. The winners check for the WS was 32k. Howard Cosell, an d Keith Jackson kept talking about the amount of money that was.....it was but boy times have changed.....back to the topic.

When do the Yankees NOT want the best free agent pitcher on the market? That does not always mean they get him, but when do they not try?

December 9, 2008  09:49 AM ET

If they don't get C.C. they'll end up signing Lowe. 15 million dollar 4th or 5th starter. Fantastic. As of right now Wang, Joba, Chamberlain, and Hughes is all they have. 3 guys with injury issues last year and and quadruple A guy with a change up for a fastball.
Somebody clone Ruth and Dimaggio

If he indeed signs for less with a team that makes more sense to him and his kin, a toast shall be raised "Cheers to the big boy, may he last on the dirt hill longer than the chicken n yams did upon his table"

Go pound sand, you feckwit. I'd rather say something completely wrong than anything you might agree with. Just send your reply via Fanmail, as you're known to do.

They still "wanted" him and certainly tried to get him. Which was his only point.

Besides, he said "best free agent pitcher." Santana was not a free agent.

I stand corrected on the free agent part, forgive me, I am swine.
But, Hank wanted Santana, Hal and Cashman who make the decisions wanted to go with the kids so technically the Yankees did not "want" him in that manner. Every team wanted the guy.

Aw, you're not swine.

I gotta say, in that case, point goes to Hank.

if this guy is taking this long to decide where he wants to go, then the Yankees need to take the offer off the table and work on Burrnett or someone else.. get back into the Peavy race or something.. i am not sure that CC is worth all this ****pain...
