Padres may start season with Peavy
Padres general manager Kevin Towers said Monday that if he doesn't find a new employer soon for his ace Jake Peavy, he might commit to keeping Peavy until the start of the 2009 season. The Padres' only substantive talks concerning Peavy are with the Cubs, Towers said, and the two sides aren't close. Towers said that Peavy, who has the protection of a no-trade clause, has displayed zero desire to play for the Yankees or any other American League team.

San Diego cannot afford to keep Peavy. The deal, no matter how uneven it gets for the Padres will get done. SD just gave away the only Major League capable shortstop in its organization for a prospect. They'll do something similar here with Peavy too. Sad stuff for Padres fans.

Padres went really downhill Keith....they made the playoffs a couple years prior, but didnt win a single series, didnt make it anywhere...and beside Peavy and Maddux there for a while..you really didnt have a pitching staff at ALL to begin with...There is no big names on their staff, Hoffman is gone, which was a huge mistake, they're not doing anything in the free agency and you're just going for prospects..expecta 4 years of cellar dwelling.
