Tigers eyeing Mariners closer

It didn't take long for the name J.J. Putz to echo throughout the corridors at the baseball winter meetings. Putz is getting plenty of attention in the hallways of the Bellagio Hotel and on Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik's cellphone. The Detroit Tigers are said to be preparing to make a push for the Mariners closer as they try to shore up a porous bullpen. Zduriencik, who just signed former Tigers prospect Chris Shelton to a minor-league deal that will see him get a shot at playing first base in spring training, said he's open to any proposals.

Looks like Putz just realized he couldn't squeeze back that shart for another inning.

This looks like a good match. Putz can come home, and Detroit can do it at a low cost.

Detroit also has many solid young outfielders, plus Larish to throw in. Think this will get done really quickly.

Tigers... you have a brutual farm system! Keep your prospects cause Putz is not taking you to the Playoffs

I agree Bi. Putz would be good. And we have a glut of outfielders. Matt Joyce is gonna be good but is useless to us for another year or two until an every day spot opens. In the mean time Guillen can fill his spot as a switch hitter effectively in the line-up and outfield. I know he is old but he'll be just fine. I think this would be good for Seattle and for Detroit. and pulling in Putz and still pursuing some free agent help as well and we might see a better more effective team. Hell- they were last in the central- I mean they cant finish worse than that again. And Yankee27, lets not discuss chances of getting to the playoffs- lets just discuss getting out of the cellar right now.

If we get Putz we will have adressed 3 major concerns already. Not a bad start. 2010 will be interesting, once some of our minor league infielders, Rick Porcello, etc. are ready. Plus Sheffield will be gone.

Ha! What a Picture,
Where is Sheff going, not next year right.

i do not want them trading joyce. He has big time power. Hits in clutch situations. Has speed and a rocket of an arm. I would truly like them to hang onto him and he is the left handed power bat they need to build with. Larish can go and a pitcher but you cant be giving up all this future for a closer who will stick around for 2 years and be gone. Why not spend a few million more and sign woods?

Sure, how about a Larish-Clevlen-AA Pitcher combo then?

I agree I would rather hang on to Joyce over any of these other guys...

Lets looka at this guys, I'm sorry but right now, just look at the market. Outfielders are a dime a dozen, and chances are, they will continue to be that for the next couple of years. Right now, JJ's price after a year with an injury and little chance of a winning season in Seattle, our buying price is never gonna be better. Let alone the facts the man is good, he has the stuff, can do the job, is form Michigan, and would be for the largest part needed to the Tigers WILLING TO PLAY IN DETROIT! Come on. Joyce is great, but we have no room for him this year and probably next year either, and by that time, we will have another 1 or 2 extra outfielders looking to come up and split some time in the OF.
Detroit need a better bullpen then they need Guillen, Thames, Joyce, and Clete Thomas all clogging one area of the outfield. Joyce is a part that would be missed- but not that much...
Peace.

I dont disagree, but of all the names I've seen mentioned, I would miss Joyce the most.

Word is Tigers are also looking at adding some help to middle relief in the form of Joe Beimel once they solidify their closer.

Putz.

I believe "Putz" is a Yiddish slang word connoting the male member.

Now, let me ask you, ladies: if you had a damned named like Putz, wouldn't you lay down a few Franklins to get that sucker changed?

To J.J. Pecker, for instance?

Or J.J. ****?

Or J.J. USS Enterprise, as my sister occasionally calls me.

And my member.

(My "member," incidentally, and to add clarity to violation reporters, refers to American Express, of which I've been a member since the first go with Iraq.)

Look at that: they zapped me with the auto-censor up there.

I feel so ashamed.
