Twins, Dodgers left wanting Wilson

he Detroit Tigers are out of the Jack Wilson scenario. The Los Angeles Dodgers appear to be waning. On deck: The Minnesota Twins. The first day of Major League Baseball's Winter Meetings at the Bellagio hotel threw a large wrench into the Pirates' clear attempts to trade their veteran shortstop, with Detroit choosing a far less expensive option by signing free agent Adam Everett to a one-year deal worth $1 million plus incentives. The Dodgers remain in need of a shortstop and, persistent reports out of Los Angeles to the contrary, reignited talks about Wilson last week. But there was been no known continuation over the weekend or at these meetings. Moreover, the Dodgers last night reopened talks to re-sign free agent Rafael Furcal. "The Dodgers are just lying low," one source said. The Twins' emergence was a surprise to some in the industry, word developing yesterday morning, but perhaps it should not have been: Everett was their shortstop part of last year, and the others they employed at the position were ineffective defensively. As with other teams, Minnesota would expect the Pirates to pay part of Wilson's tab, but a possible return was not known. The Twins' system is deep with prospects, though, so a match on that front seems plenty doable. One player Minnesota is shopping for a trade is Delmon Young, 23, a talented, sometimes troubled outfielder. He batted .290 with 10 home runs and 69 RBIs over 152 games last season, but Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said in a recent interview that Young will not be part of his outfield in 2009.

The dodgers need to step their game up and sign Furcal. Trading for Delmong Young will be a good deal to somebody, he can be a knucklehead but with his upside someone should take a chance on him.

One would think there is something seriously wrong mentality with Delmon Young to give up on him so early and for the Twins to paint themselves into a corner. That Matt Garza trade is not looking good now. I can't see why someplace like Milwaukee or lower key area might not be a great place for him to mature.

Furcal played half of the games during his 3 year contract with the Dodgers. They need someone who will cost less, fewer year committment, and will be there ready to play day in day out. This will also free up $$$ to get Manny

Furcal is very up and down, as well..... he was never a fave of mine in Atlanta.... he had his moments where you thought he would be great..... then he'd go 2-20 and the Braves would lose four in a row....

"Everett was their shortstop part of last year, and the others they employed at the position were ineffective defensively." So whoever wrote this thinks Nick Punto is an ineffective shortstop? There went all of their credibility.

One picket to Tittsburgh, please.

Punto is a good utility man. Nothing more. I would love to have him in Anaheilm though. He kills us.

the pirates do not need another outfielder unless he can hit 30 homeruns.

"Ron Gardenhire said in a recent interview that Young will not be part of his outfield in 2009."

Well, there it is then. And gotta agree with you Geeechiman. While Punto didn't repeat his vomit worthy offensive output of 2006, nothing more then a good utility player.

As a twin fan I do not think another soft hitting SS is a good idea rather get a heavy infield bat the Twins have enough gloves to play all the positions wilson is not what we should want we should be traiding young for an infield bat. No problem getting rid of him if it is for the right price but we need dingers not a .275 average

December 9, 2008  08:15 PM ET

WHY ????????????????

December 9, 2008  11:33 PM ET

What would it be like if all the Pirates fans showed up for the home opener, and they just announced "Sorry, we traded everyone away for future draft picks. See you next year!"

Would anyone really care?

December 9, 2008  11:53 PM ET

Signed Adam Everett for $1M?! The guy hit like .213 last year.

December 10, 2008  03:06 AM ET

Delmon Young will probably be a National.

Twins need to get someone better than Jack Wilson if they trade Delmon Young. Why not trade him to Seattle for Adrian Beltre or to the Braves for Yunel Escobar? Try and see if the Dodgers would part with Matt Kemp and a prospect. There is to much upside to Delmon Young to trade him for nothing.
