Possible Dodgers-Yankees deal

Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti, who is trying to upgrade his team's second base position, said today that he hasn't talked to the Yankees about Robinson Cano. Colletti didn't rule out that there is a fit between the two teams at that position, saying: "That's a possibility, but we haven't really talked." A Yankees team official also said the two sides have not discussed a Cano trade. The Dodgers would like to upgrade their infield, and with Joe Torre as manager, Cano could be of interest to L.A. As of now, however, that's more talk than anything. Some believe the Yankees will try to trade Cano after his down year last season (.271 average, 14 home runs, 72 RBIs). GM Brian Cashman seems to think that dealing Cano now would be "selling low."

Ya think?

Wao, Trading Cano would rank right upthere with not pulling the Trigger for Santana. i'm sure that now he would probably give up Hughes, Kennedy, and Melky for santana. too bad its too late. Cano has the potential to be a legendary hitter, but the kid is young and needs to learn a lot. Girardi needs to figure out a way to help him get there.

I'd snap him up in a trade in a heart beat. He just turned 26. He has 4 full years in the AL East with a .303 batting average while showing some pop for a middle infielder.

I like how they don't even name what they're offering, i admit Cano had a bad year and the dodgers have tons of young talent. I'd still keep him though. He's legit.

December 9, 2008  08:40 AM ET

Deal him.

He is too laid back for New York. Girardi will pull his non-existent hair out trying to keep this guy's intensity up and play hard day to day. Cano is gifted, noone has ever disputed this, but I seriously doubt his commitment to the game. Get a few studs to develop and fill his roster spot with Orlando Hudson, a better defensive player and a guy with a high OBP and leadoff hitting potential.

you know- even after his PUTRID year- his #'s are still better
than the average 2nd baseman
- he'll have a better year now that Abreu is gone- whom I feel
was an awful influence on him

December 9, 2008  09:08 AM ET

The rumor I read is the Yankees would want one of their top pitchers (Krenshaw or Billingsly) and when the Dodgers say no to that, they'd ask for Matt Kemp.

I honestly don't see any of those trads happening.

December 9, 2008  09:12 AM ET

Way too early in the game to write off Cano. One subpar year with a bit of an attitude problem for the young millionaire is hardly shocking. But hell, who knows? Torre might start next season with Cano at second, Pettite on the mound, and Abreu in right field. Who woulda thought two New York baseball teams could move to Los Angeles in the same century?

Why do you feel that?

The Dodgers are the Yankees/Red Sox retirement home.

They could do worse. Imagine their dismay if they all got traded to the Del Boca Vista of the midwest, the Kansas City Royals ...

i love how the headling on the front page is "Yanks-Dodgers discuss deal" then the title here is "Possible Dodgers-Yankees deal" then if you actually do some research the two sides haven't even talked in MONTHS..... i'm going to write an article with the heading "Yanks trade Kei Igawa for Jake Peavy and Albert Plujos?" then the actaully article will just say that i had thought of this trade but there is zero truth to it whatsoever

December 9, 2008  09:55 AM ET

I'm not ready to give up on Cano and even last year his numbers weren't terrible for a 2nd baseman. From what I heard he a Melky were bad influences on each other and this year Cano began a new off season routine and is workinjg out like a maniac.

December 9, 2008  09:56 AM ET

Matt Kemp is a future 30-30 guy and it would give the Yankees an extra right handed batter. This would be a perfect match for both teams and hope this trades goes down.

i think you have Abreu confused with Melky, Cano did play much better when Melky was down in scranton... but then they had to bring him back up and cano went back to the portajohn..

Is Cano a 13-year-old girl? Who is that easily influenced by his peers?

If he is, you might want to give SR a heads-up ... he just got a new sub-zero freezer on black Friday ...

December 9, 2008  10:29 AM ET

I don't know what that means...

Dodgers just signed Loretta. So, this story is officially debunked.

on what do you base your assertion taht Abreu was a bad influence?

Forget writing him off...that language does not belong next to the name Cano. You have torre, the guy's last manager interested in him because he knows how good he is. The guy hit .330+ for a season, not a short month or two, that is no fluke. Does he need to get his head in the game defensively at times, yes, but he is not as bad as he was last year, which really was not that bad overall. After they benched him for one game he was on fire, again. He need to be well motivated, perhaps the Yankees are not used to dealing with young players who need this but they will figure it out. Don't trade Cano, ends of that.
