06:34 AM ET 12.09 | Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips defended Pro Bowl running back Marion Barber's toughness on Monday and said the team determined he couldn't play Sunday. After Sunday's loss to Pittsburgh, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Barber could have played with the dislocated little toe and that it was the player's decision to sit out. Phillips said the athletic training staff determined Saturday he could not play and needed to remain in Dallas for treatment and stay off his feet. Barber also had a sore right calf that developed after he ran and compensated for the toe injury during the week. According to Phillips, the calf injury was more of a problem than the toe. But Jones said after the game the calf injury was not serious. "He didn't strain anything," Jones said. "There was no tear. He had a sore calf. Because he didn't get any reps this week, the combination of all of that, he didn't think he could go."
