Georgia assistant coach Rodney Garner has been interviewed by Auburn for its head football coach vacancy. Garner did not return phone messages Monday but issued a statement through UGA's sports communications office. Garner, who has been with the Bulldogs since 1998, currently holds the titles of assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach. He was an All-SEC offensive lineman at Auburn in the 1980s and worked there as an assistant coach before going to Tennessee, then Georgia. According to media reports out of Alabama, Garner interviewed with Auburn officials on Sunday in New York. Garner told the AJC last week he would be interested in becoming the Tigers' head coach if he was offered the position.

Yeah, but even if the AD says it, would you believe it?

He wants the job and I am sure he's a cheaper alternative then some of the others being tossed around for the job.

After paying Tommy 5 million I am sure they are looking for a good coach but on the cheap.

He was the bag man when Auburn were paying Eric Ramsey.

Some UGA honk post please.... Is this guy any good??

That's what my friends are saying.

And dammit! I had typed "They were" and changed it to Auburn and then didn't check noun/verb agreement!!

Okie honk

Yes, Garner is one of the reasons for UGA's talent pool. He's an incredible recruiter and will probably drain a good bit of Georgia players over to Auburn. Until this year he's coached the defensive lines to excellence. He had a bad run of injuries this year, though.

So, yes, this guy is good.

It's unfortunate that we might lose him but I am happy for his opportunity. He's a good man.

I echo the sentiments of Don Bowers.

Garner has always done a great job of recruiting. It'll be sad to see him go, but I think he'll do well as head coach if he is hired.

Where's Charlie Strong gonna go? That's the question.

Then he should be able to help with the tougher recruits

He did a hell of a job when he was at Tennessee in terms of recruiting.

Sad as I am to say it, I don't think coach Garner will get the job (and he would be an excellent choice): consider this, AU forced out a somewhat 'big-name' coach. There is going to be a lot of pressure to hire an even bigger name or a 'hot young coach'. The solid, non-flashy hire of Garner wouldn't cut it, I don't think.

Which probably works in Garner's favor, tbh. I think the next coach at Auburn is going to have to make an NC game in three years or less, or he'll be in a firestorm, and frankly, I just don't see how that is possible.

Yes, very good points.

Garner probably does deserve better. Coaching at Auburn is like playing Russian Roulette with your career.
