Peavy, DeRosa in four-team trade?

Phillies officials were working on a complex trade late last night that could bring them a player who would provide insurance for second baseman Chase Utley and a righthanded bat in left field. In a proposed multi-team trade, Mark DeRosa would go from the Chicago Cubs to the Phillies. The Phillies would send the Cubs a prospect or two, which in turn could be sent to San Diego in a package for pitcher Jake Peavy. Pitcher J.A. Happ is one of the prospects the Phils could part with. There were rumblings that the proposed deal could include a fourth team, most likely the Baltimore Orioles.

Interesting, but let's see if any of these teams pulls the trigger or not on this...

"the proposed deal could include a fourth team, most likely the Baltimore Orioles."

or the proposed trade could fizzle since the teams currently involved aren't getting what they want out of the deal.

San Diego Union Tribune is reporting something just like this today too. Chase Utley's early-season absence and the Phillies' concern of that matter just may be the reason this whole deal happens. How many Padres fans even blinked an eye at the Utley story weeks ago and how it could affect Jake Peavy?

The trade is in trouble if it involves the Orioles. They may well be the most unreasonable team in either league when it comes to trades.

Peavy is the Truth, why arent more teams trying to get him, instead of overpriced Sebathia?

December 9, 2008  08:07 AM ET

I don't want to give up Happ. He looks to be pretty good and we need pitching if we don't resign Moyer.

DeRosa is coming off a career year and is in the final year of his contract giving Cubs payroll to shed. Cubs could platoon Fontenot / Cedeno for a full season at 2B but would lose some of their edge with DeRosa's lost versatility. Marquis MUST be moved to get a high end left handed bat to replace Derosa's lost offensive power. Hard nosed player, hard to give up.

I haven't seen Derosa play, can he?

You've got to be kidding me, we're going to get ride of a great batter for a pitcher? Am I blind or something? did I not see that there hitting in the last 2 post season were because of lcak of hitting. You can have the best starting pitching rotation but if you don't have the bats your not going to win. DeRosa was one of the most consistant batters we had

we get it, hes going to the cubs..... zzzzzzzz.... next.

Peavy becomes their #1, which allows Zambrano to face other #2's improving his #'s, places Harden as the #3, making their staff so much better and they may be able to trade a starter for a bat to help their non-hitting overpaid Japanese import. Also, this may reopen those RUMORS for Roberts?

I wouldn't call DeRosa a great hitter by any stretch. He's a very valuable player who can play multiple positions, hits well, and seems like a good team guy.

True Peavy would surely upgrade the very short list of talent on the Cubs pitching staff but make them a threat he would not. Cubs are about 3 trades from contending for the BIG prize and this is only one. They still need to add a closer and a power outfield bat or it'll be a first round sweepchinski like last year. And besides, this is merely rumor and sounds peculiar to begin with. May it be true and they still burn in hell as far as Im concerned

No team is perfect, and who really picked the Phillies to win it all? Or the NY Giants to run through the playoffs, unless you're a diehard of either team. Every team has holes, and I do mean every team. There will be players will have better than average years, so guys will struggle, some guys will come up from the minors and help, and there's the great variable, injuries.

December 9, 2008  10:29 AM ET

If the Phillies have the prospects that San Diego would want, why not trade for Peavy? A 1-2 of Peavy and Hamels would be a favorite to repeat no matter who is batting behind Utley.

I have seen teams without holes underperform, but yes, given, a team without holes is rare indeed, and there are none out there now.

What can you say?? All these complex trade rumors give me a headache..... multi team deals are very difficult to pull off.... but the Swap Meet is desperate to trade Peavy, so anything could happen..... I guess....
