Why Colt McCoy's staying at Texas

Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, a likely Heisman finalist, will stay for his senior season. McCoy told the American-Statesman of his decision Monday. "I'm not going anywhere," McCoy said. McCoy said he wants to play for a national championship, after falling one spot short of the title game this season. "I'm coming back because we have a solid coaching staff," he said. "And I'm coming back because I feel like I can develop the young receivers we have." McCoy said he will not "initiate" an evaluation with the NFL underclassmen committee. He said his coaches may ask for an evaluation for informational purposes, but he does not plan on asking them to do so. McCoy is a redshirt junior and a three-year starter. He's thrown for 3,445 yards with 32 touchdowns. After this semester, he'll have 12 hours remaining before he graduates. He said he's planning to complete an internship next summer and will take a final course next fall, then graduate.

Like I said before. In the current decline of America and possible depression era creeping up, I don't blame any kid who decides to secure his financial future and that of his family and chase the money with an NFL contract. Even if it is a failure, most signing bonus packages can set up a person for life, if the money is used wisely. I always believed in all of these guys getting their degrees and an education, as a symbol of the meaning of college/amateur athletics, but those days are sadly long gone. None the less, all the luck to Colt McCoy, a class act and great QB who may be getting that certain trophy on Saturday night.

East: I don't believe it has anything to do with Cold having class or wanting to do the right thing blah blah blah... I just think this kid knows he needs another year to develop if he really wants to be an NFL player... There's just not enough on his resume to warrant a high draft pick... He's not a dummy...

From a fan's viewpoint, this is why I love college football so much more than college basketball. So often it is 1 and done with basketball.

Why not milk one more year of god like status before going to the NFL and holding a clip board?

Yeah but there is that matter of going when your stock is highest. I'm not sure it's gonna get any higher unless he improves to levels that I don't really think are possible from him. He's just one of those guys who is a great college player but won't do jack in the pros.

Might as well get the big signing bonus before they really start to nitpick you to death next year and you move to the 2nd day of the draft. There are also rumblings about a rookie salary scale on the horizon. The commish has openly said he hates the huge rookie contracts for untested players. We will have to see who the new leader of the NFLPA is and what his feelings are on it. Lots of veteran players would love to see it.

Good for Colt McCoy. sounds like a smart plan. taking care of business now to prepare after football is over.

Colt McCoy had an amazing season but if he isn't a first rounder, then he had all right to come back. Texas has the personnel for him to come back next season and make a run at the Championship.

While I advocate for players to take the money and run, I got no qualms with Colt coming back for his senior season.

December 9, 2008  09:28 AM ET

I'm sure the fact that he would be the 4th best pro QB in this year's draft has nothing to do w/ his decision to stay another year. Being a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick kinda sux after 3 years of being the man @ Texas

December 9, 2008  09:30 AM ET

Good guy. It'll make next season a lot more interesting with Colt running around out there.

December 9, 2008  09:34 AM ET

Colt *should* stay. He's going to have a sweet OLine next year. He'll have killer stats.

Runningbacks, I say go. The risk of injury is too high. QBs tend to get better with maturity and experience. Stick around Colt. Exact your revenge. You know you want it.

I think colt is more than ready to be a first round draft pick... if any college QB is ready I think its colt... his passes are on target with great arm strength... only thing I'm worried about is if he comes back but plays like he is trying not to get hurt... If he leaves it all out on the field like he has done this year... the sky is the limit next year

December 9, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Well it could be that he nows that this next draft he isnt going to be the number one commodity, well he isn't going to be if mr Tebow decides to leave Florida and go to the nfl.

If he manages to get another great year in Texas next season, when he turns up in the draft he could be one of the first draft choices and not second fiddle to no one.

December 9, 2008  10:01 AM ET

Just wait until everyone finds out the next QB in line just might endup being even better than Colt

December 9, 2008  10:04 AM ET

McCoy isn't the leading pro candidate this year.... He won't be next year either... I am not a UT fan... But I think he is making a great decision by staying in school... Just like Tebow... He isn't ready for the NFL yet

Tebow is not really a nfl QB... more like a NFL FB... but well see... I just can't picture Tebow as a NFL QB

Some of the lesser known kids. The kid from Tulsa. The one from BYU, maybe. They don't get the attention because they're not playing for the "big name" schools, and they're not surrounded by the talent to get quite the stats as Bradford or Tebow or McCoy. But they're NFL caliber all the same.

I agree, he is using his head and not letting the glitz and glamor of potential NFL Millions cloud his judgement, and on a side note i think the Longhorns WILL WIN the national title next year and NO i am NOT a Longhorn fan.Red Raiders all the way baby!!

I don't know who has pegged the top QB in the draft but it seems I heard the GA QB some time back but I think he definitely needs to stay another year.

I think he's staying in college another year because he's afraid if he goes pro the Lions might draft him. I would be.
