Always outspoken Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter ended his two-week media embargo by coming to the defense of his former Steelers teammate Plaxico Burress, saying professional athletes have a right to own and bear arms. "Until you've been in a situation where you've been robbed at gun point, or you've had a gun waived in your face, or been car jacked, you really don't know what it feels like," Porter said. Porter, a victim of a shooting outside a Denver nightclub five years ago, admitted he's a gun owner, and said he's just one of many NFL players who feel they need to have a firearm to defend themselves and their families. Porter said his gun is registered in California but not Florida.

Joey Joey Joey...if you have millions of dollars you shouldn't be going anywhere that might risk you getting a gun waved in your face...

December 10, 2008  07:37 AM ET

Porter is a moron and The Commish needs to fine him every time he opens his big fat mouth. FIne if you want to bear arms...but follow the safety rules and regulations a gun owner should follow... for starters like always keep the safety ON! Secondly instead of tryin to be a thug from a movie or something have some sort of holster to put the damn thing in!!! These guys dont understand how much they have until they do something stupid and lose it all.

You sir are an idiot. If you've been watching sports at all in the last few years you would know that athletes have been robbed at gunpoint in their own house and even by their own staff. I love it how redneck white people are allowed to buy guns but heaven forbid a black person carry a gun. People like you will start saying "why do you need a gun, avoid places where you use a gun." Double standard? I think so, get some perspective fool.

To a point, Joey Porter is actually right. But, Plax is a bad example. He had an unregistered hand gun. If it was registered I would have no problem with Plax carrying a gun.

December 10, 2008  07:45 AM ET

"Porter, a victim of a shooting outside a Denver nightclub"- Why put yorself in the position where you need to protect yourself? Being young, rich, and visible will make you a target. It just never ends well. Not in the media, not for the fans ,and not for the players.

December 10, 2008  07:46 AM ET

Porter is right... it's a different world out here now... people are bold and will try to take what you have. You can NOT tell a man he can't go out and enjoy himself because of all the ills in the world... All he can do is try to protect himself. Yes, the firearm wasn't registered, but all in all, he had no ill will...

It's this simple, hire a freakin' security detail. You have the money. Carrying a gun because feel threatened is not the answer and that just leads to accidents and vigilatism. So, you're in a nightclub and some guy is eyeballing you and you feel threatened. Gonna go ahead and shoot him because you think he might be targeting you? How about he just doesn't like you team and, especially you? It's stupid to say you need to gun to protect yourself because you're a millionaire football player. You now have responsiblity to stay away from trouble. You wanted the limelight you have to accept what comes with it. Having a gun at home to protect your family? Justifiable as long as that weapon is legally purchased and registered. Carrying a gun to a nightclub, especially those clubs that are less than respectable, well, that's just asking for trouble.

December 10, 2008  07:57 AM ET

"vigilantism"

December 10, 2008  08:04 AM ET

So are we going to have to start arming ourselves just to protect us from NFL players?

December 10, 2008  08:05 AM ET

Is there any bad behavior by a player that Porter does not support. I think he was also on record supporting Vick. Plax not only had an unregistered gun, he also showed he did not know how to handle a gun. In a bar drinking, gun in the waist of your sweats, is a stupid move.

December 10, 2008  08:20 AM ET

NFL players have a right to bear arms, go to clubs, wear bling etc. but they must realize that having the right to do something does not mean that they are not responsible if something goes wrong. there are risks associated with wearing bling and going to clubs. if you are willing to get in a shootout over jewelry then by all mean have at it, but don't get defensive when the law comes down on you for having an unregistered weapon, having a gun where it doesn't belong, or for hurting an innocent bystander. bad stuff happens to good people sometimes, but don't expect sympathy from us when that bad stuff happens if you knowingly put yourself in harm???s way.

December 10, 2008  08:21 AM ET

yes joey, the Second Amendment does allow for the right to "own and bear arms." it does not exempt someone from the laws that apply to discharging the weapon or not having a license to own the weapon.

the laws apply. whether your personal worth is 5 thousand or 5 trillion.

so as usual, when joey speaks: **** joey.

December 10, 2008  08:21 AM ET

He does have a right to bear arms. I nice big fuzzy pair of bear arms.

since you brought up race and rednecks, most rednecks use their guns for hunting or shooting clays. not many bring their guns to da club, and if they did, they wouldn't shoot themselves with it.
ps you sir are an idiot, no one said he can't have a gun, what he said was that this was an entirely avoidable situation. furthermore, plax has been arrested for having an unregistered weapon, and bringing it somewhere that is against the law. this is not a black white thing, this is an idiot thing. get some perspective fool

December 10, 2008  08:29 AM ET

Shut up Porter...quit trying to get attention....

December 10, 2008  08:37 AM ET

Where the hell is Porter going that he is getting car jacked, guns waived in his face, or robbed at gun point? I will be the first one to defend some ones right to bear arms. And no one is going around and asking Brett Favre about his gun collection or gun carrying habits.

But c'mon Porter. Know when to pick your battles and hire a PR person so you don't sound like the consummate thug and all around idiot. Then, try finding a bar in a nice part of Miami, or better yet, drive on over to Disney World, have a drink in the resorts downtown area, and Shut d f_u_*_c K up.

December 10, 2008  08:57 AM ET

Then get a LEGAL permit to carry the gun. Or crazy me, hire a body guard.

December 10, 2008  08:58 AM ET

It takes a real genius to change teams, move to a different state and then publicly say that you have not yet registered your guns in the new state.

December 10, 2008  08:58 AM ET

This whole line about these players needing to protect themselves is nonsense....when was the last time one of these guys actually used a gun to defend themselves or stop a crime?
