Teams asking about Rangers' Young

The Mets, Angels, Dodgers and Royals are among several teams to inquire here about the availability of shortstop extraordinaire Michael Young of the Texas Rangers. The Rangers are not shopping Young, but they are willing to listen to overtures on just about anyone, and that includes the five-time All-Star who won a Gold Glove in 2008 and has spent his entire career with Texas. There are quite a few teams in need of a shortstop, so it's not surprising that a number of them have asked about Young, a terrific all-around player who has $60 million and five years remaining on his contract. Presumably, the Mets' interest would be for a second baseman, a position Young played beautifully when he first came to the majors in 2000 before moving to short in 2004. But the Mets say they won't acquire a second baseman unless they can first deal Luis Castillo -- a very difficult task, since Castillo is coming off an absolutely brutal, injury-plagued, out-of-shape season.

Young is a great SS. But the Mets wont be able to deal Castillo. Anyone know how much more time Castillo has? Also, on a separate note, how long does Hanley Ramirez have with the Marlins? He would be a much better suit for the Mets to pick up in the future.

Hanley will never be a Met.

/facepalm

This is a slap in the face to those few true Ranger fans. Nolan Ryan and the Texas organization should be ashamed of themselves for even letting his name get talked about in rumors.

So much for the lies that have been told that the Rangers are building for the future. I have lost all faith in ownership and management. Today my sports hero Nolan Ryan failed all Ranger fans. It is a very sad and disappointing day.

I agree with you about keeping your 'core' guys....
I wish ALL teams did that

but in fairness- he is 31 & likely has only 2-3 more years
left of quality production & if they can move him for some
pitching- in this case I don't think it would be such a bad thing

I've been a Rangers fan even in those days when Don Zimmer was manager and players like Doc Medich and Larry Parrish were wearing paper sacks over their heads at how bad the Rangers were. So forgive me, but if the Rangers are going with youth especially in this economy, then you have to be willing to part with even a face of the franchise like Michael Young. Sorry, but if Young will get you better pitching in return and you can use maybe Joaquin Arias or somebody else at SS until Elvis Andrus might be ready to take over, you make the trade. Ask the Houston Astros how they are doing hanging on to guys like Berkman and Pence while they have virtually no real starting pitchers behind Oswalt in their rotation. Why should the Rangers management be loyal to their players when players like Teixeira have no loyalty to the organization? I think loyalty went out the door a couple of player strikes ago. Especially since the last strike, I just want to see the Rangers be successful and I don't care what players come and go.

get something while you can for him. is #'s are dipping he only hit 284 last year with over 100k's. he is still owed over 60 million that you do not want to be on the hook for.

just an impartial observer

if the mets can move castillo to texas where he can play second and kinsler can play short, theyre gonna need to include a top pitching prospect to pry young in exchange to play second. i dont think the mets have the prospects that could get this type of deal done with niese and parnell being not really top tier prospects. but hopefully omar can get this done itd give the mets by far the best infield in the majors. wright, reyes, young, delgado

I think in this day and age you got to get pitching and younger players. The Rays are the prime example. Rangers haven't been really competitive in a long time. So let Nolan shake things up its not like they'll get much worse.

The Rangers are losers, they have always been losers, and they will always be losers.

ZACK GRIENKE, PLUS? Who else is the Royals throwing out there? Keep the middle infield. I agree the defense is lacking and the numbers were down last year but he is still one of the top 10 and he is young enogh to stick with. It will take a lot of pitcing and only pitchihng to pull the deal in my eyes.

That's sounds like the voice of a bandwagon redsox/yankees fan or whatever fruitpicker team is doing well in california!! The Rangers have great great talent all throughout the organization and things could come together this season. I hope you're an angels fan and just being a baby about your time letting players go left and right this offseason for nothing in return. We've got the best player in baseball, so **** Ranger-hater!!!!!
