Portis blasts Coach Zorn

A day after Washington Redskins Coach Jim Zorn said Clinton Portis's lack of practice contributed to his benching during Sunday's 24-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, the running back fired back yesterday, pointedly criticizing the coach's communication and decision-making. In his weekly radio appearance on WTEM-980's "The John Thompson Show," Portis dismissed as "B.S." Zorn's suggestion that missing practice had hurt the execution of his assignments. He said he was at every meeting and every practice last week, noted teammates had played on Sunday after missing practice the week before and guaranteed he knows the playbook better than any player besides the quarterbacks. "We got a genius for a head coach, I don't know, I'm sure he on top of things. He's got everything figured out. Hey, that's up to him. All I can do is when he calls a play is go out and try to execute to the best of my ability."

agreed. but still. you gotta hand it to portis. the man knows his plays. he's what, 3rd for most rushing yards in the NFL? you dont get those kind of stats if you are an undedicated player. as for zorney, did the redskins have a shot to make the playoffs? perhaps one in a million. but there was still a shot. not anymore

unfortunate, two pretty good people with their laundry all out for everyone to see.....

Zorn never should have made it seem that Portis did not know his assignments. Players do not practice all week so they can be healthy for game day. Portis knows his job. I am sure Zorn wishes he could have given a different reason, because the one he gave was not the true one...I cannot fault Portis here, it was the coach who told the world the guy did not know what to do...

Portis should practice, though...I don't think it's fair that other players bust their butts in practice and he sits out and still gets the start every day.

But, on the other hand, if he knows all of his assignments and comes ready to execute and DOES execute, nobody can really say much. Practicing might help his conditioning though - anything over a 10-yard run for him requires a trip to the oxygen tank =)

Portis plays hard on Sundays. The man has a torn MCL I believe, and neck and other injuries. "And we're talking about practice? Practice? Not a game, but practice". What's the point of him practicing 3 or 4 times a week and getting banged up and not playing Sunday's?

C-Smith: Practice schmactice... that has nothing to do with anything... as a running back, your job is simple... run the plays that are given. I could see if it was a linebacker or a corner facing a new offence they needed to prepare for, but running plays don't change...

Zorn should have just kept it real and said that he thought they had a better shot with Betts... Logical? NO, but hey, he must have thought it for some reason.

I agree. Would have sounded odd, but that had to be what he thought..

Practice schmactice? What about blocking assignments for different defensive blitz schemes?

Sorry. You play how you practice. If you don't practice, you can be like Allen Iverson if you'd like. Word on the street is Allen Iverson's never won a championship.

Portis has been hurt, Zorn is feeling the pressure.

December 10, 2008  08:12 AM ET

Zorn saw his hurting feature back taking a pounding and knew that success was not going to happen against that defence...

he just wanted to make sure that Portis would be available the rest of the season...

December 10, 2008  08:19 AM ET

I think this season is officially a wash. Portis should welcome the idea of sitting out the next few weeks.

December 10, 2008  08:24 AM ET

Hey Portis: The Dolphins would love to have you!

December 10, 2008  08:24 AM ET

bodog should start taking bets on who will last longer in dc, zorn or portis..

December 10, 2008  08:26 AM ET

Portis is near the end of his career and the skins know it so Zorn wanted
to see what others show on the field. Trade him and get something decent
for him.

December 10, 2008  08:27 AM ET

Portis is tight on this issue. The guy is a gamer and is banged up. If he were missing assignments or not understanding the offense than I could see the coaches point of view. CP has always been a team player and like most stars should he wants to be in the game or have a chance to help his team. Zorn probably could have clarified his remarks but hey it is what it is!

December 10, 2008  08:28 AM ET

.....right on this issue, my bad

December 10, 2008  08:54 AM ET

It might just be me but I dont really think his comment sounds like he "blasted" coach Zorn. He just sounds like he was a little dissapointed that he did not play. With that said, he shouldnt bring up the word genius until he learns how to speak English a little better.

December 10, 2008  08:59 AM ET

Geniuses don't pull their star running back in the 4th quarter.
