Market closing on Varitek

According to an unnamed source who spoke to WEEI.com's Lou Merloni, Jason Varitek is still seeking a multi-year deal to serve as a starting catcher. The source also conceded that the market for Varitek is slow right now. From the Globe's Nick Cafardo: The Red Sox would like to have Varitek back on a short-term deal of no more than two years at close to the $10 million-per-year contract he's just coming off. While Boras believes there will be a market for Varitek, it hasn't become obvious yet. A few baseball people at the winter meetings seemed skeptical any team would commit to Varitek for more than two years. Varitek, 36, hit only .220 in 2008 as his offensive numbers continue to slide.

Jason we hardly knew ya. But seriously Jason will have a job.

Closing? It's not been open at that price anywhere outside Boston. Sign the contract already. You're a 36 year old catcher coming off a horrible season.

December 10, 2008  07:57 AM ET

He will sign. Maybe a 4% raise or something.... You know.. the economy...

i love you jason

Varitek is getting up there in age, but the Sox offered him arbitration, Boras screwed Varitek by telling him not to take it.

"We"? Whatever there dude. Anyway, What insghtful statements made from a true sport genius. Go back to bed old man. Varitek and yourself have a lot in common actually when you think about it. Old, grey, and trying to find work

Dude... the posing really has gotten old on this site. Get original.

This guy is worth a contract, he is easily one of the best catchers in baseball. This one year where his BA tanked was most likely an anomale. Guy was going through some family strife and we all know how those kind of things can spill over into your work, friendships, et cetera. I highly doubt we're going to see numbers like that from him in '09. but at 36, a multi-year deal beyond two is going to be hard to come by. Nobody is going to sign him for his hitting or to platoon him at first base. The guy is a stud catcher and calls a great game and that's where his value lies. Posada was damned fortunate to get the deal he got, but that shouldn't set the market. I love Jorge but the Yankees were a little trigger-happy on that four-year deal.

December 10, 2008  09:07 AM ET

Boras is crazy, fair market value for a old catcher with really bad #s, I think not.

December 10, 2008  09:10 AM ET

He'll get a 2-year deal from the Sox. Maybe $18 million.

Ur right starz. I still think they will sign him for 2 years. Not sure if at 10 per year though..

December 10, 2008  10:30 AM ET

He had a phenominal career for the Sox- but he simply is not
an everyday MLB catcher anymore.

The sox should offer him a YEAR at 12 mil....
-as a 'reward' for past service-
if he takes it - fine
if not.....he's welcome to come back and coach when he's done playing

That would just be too bad that a Boras client ended up screwing the pooch!

Kinda like an early christmas present or a birthday BJ!

December 10, 2008  12:06 PM ET
