How Wolverines missed on Bradford
The New York Times published a big feature story last week on Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, a strong candidate to win the Heisman Trophy on Saturday. Included in Thayer Evans' article was a passage about Bradford's recruitment by Michigan. A snippet: Just days after (Oklahoma assistant coach Chuck) Long's visit, Michigan's quarterbacks coach at the time, Scot Loeffler, watched Bradford throw. He, too, promised a scholarship offer the next Monday from Lloyd Carr, the Wolverines' coach at the time. But Carr did not call that Monday. On Wednesday, Loeffler called (high school coach Bob) Wilson and explained that Carr did not call because one of his grandchildren had been born over the weekend. Loeffler told Wilson that Carr would call the next Monday with a scholarship offer. The next day, Bradford had his meeting with Stoops and Long. He committed to the Sooners before Michigan made an offer. "There was no question we would have loved to have him," Carr said in a telephone interview. "We felt in evaluating him that he was going to be a great player."

This implies Bradford would have gone to Michigan had Carr made a "timely" offer. That's a stretch and a half.

Normally I think T&R is stretching it when they report recruiting news, but they took it to a whole new level today talking about hypothetical recruiting news... nice work, this might actually make all their other stories seem more relevant...

that's what i thought as i was reading the article.
i think the likelihood is that he would have stayed in his home state (OK) and played for the same college team his dad played for back in the day.

Glad to see Michigan missed out. Sorry it's not UT in the big game, though.

It doesn't imply that Bradford would have gone to UM. What it does show is that LC got lazy about recruiting towards the end of his tenure at UM. Those who have followed the program closely know this. It's also known that Carr truly disliked recruiting and was one of the major components that led him to want to retire.

That and his inability to progress and develop the 3 and 4 star prospects. 5 star kids would be good but not great in his tenure.

This story is just salt in the wound. Anyway, he's an Oklahoma kid who dreamed of Oklahoma. He wasn't going to Michigan anyway.

Impressive work from the Detroit Press. And we're supposed to bailout these people?

Bradford's father played at OU in the 70's under Switzer. Bradford grew up in OKC idolizing the Sooners, and wears #14 after his favorite Sooner player, current OU QB coach Josh Heupel. Growing up in OKC, Bradford attended several OU summer football camps. Bradford has stated on several occasions his dream growing up in OKC was to play for the Sooners. You think Carr's phone call carried enough weight to counter all of that?

I endorse this post.
I would also like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Mr. Bomar for being such a bonehead.

What this article is trying to say is, "Hey, screw your grandchildren, Mr. Carr, you should have went and got that commitment."
I would have went to see my grandchild.

Even better, "**** grandchildren, go make an offer to a QB that you don't have a snowball's chance of landing"
It may have been time for Carr to move on, but you can't question his priorities in this case. Maybe the Detroit Free Press is laying the ground work for a ND/Ty Willingham defense - Big Blue sux and it's all Lloyd Carr's fault for the next 8 years!

Carr left about 4 years too late. Good riddance. Rodrigues may not be the answer, but at least he's not Carr.

I had always said be careful what you wish for you might just get it. Lloyds overall record at Michigan is quite impressive. Too bad Dick Rod will not be around long enough to sniff it.

Mr. Beepo,
You live in Ypsi! what's with the UM hate? You are on the wrong side of the tracks man
This article is so dumb, they should talk about the hypotheticals about how we could have gotten Pryor instead of Bradford...

Another meaningful story brought to you by the Detroit Free Press or Atlanta Journal Constitution. ;)
Like Bradford being at Michigan at the dawn of Rich Rod would've helped any. He probably would've transferred along with what's his face who now plays for Arkansas.

Carr had Mallet who appeared to be another good pro-style Michigan QB when he filled in for Henne. I don't think a late offer is a big deal.
