Chiefs to debate QB of future

Chiefs officials will gather in three weeks and lay out a plan that could decide Kansas City's direction for years. They will debate whether Tyler Thigpen has proved himself capable of being the team's long-term starter at quarterback. But the discussion will go deeper than that. The Chiefs want to figure out whether they can build next year's team continuing to use the spread offense, a scheme that was supposed to be as temporary as Thigpen's place in the starting lineup. When Thigpen and the spread thrived, it attracted the attention of at least one of the men who will have a prominent voice in that meeting. Still, the Chiefs are likely to target a quarterback during the offseason, whether that's through free agency or the draft, and Edwards said that player might be chosen based on how he fits into the spread system. Four of the top college quarterbacks -- Oklahoma's Sam Bradford, Texas Tech's Graham Harrell, Texas' Colt McCoy and Florida's Tim Tebow -- all lead spread offenses.

How many years can we go back that they were not doing this?

December 10, 2008  08:22 AM ET

they need to debate, the gm of the future and the head coach of the future in the off season.

Keep the spread, keep Thigpen and trade Larry Johnson for draft picks or a offensive lineman. The skill positions are all young and should gel.

December 10, 2008  09:12 AM ET

what they neeed to debate is the head coaching

December 10, 2008  10:02 AM ET

A rookie QB isn't their answer... they have way more needs than that...

The GM and the Coach should go.

December 10, 2008  12:04 PM ET

Stafford, Bradford, Cassel, Vick, Tebow.... take your pick. All KC needs is a quaterback. They have built an offensive line and a physical defensive.

December 10, 2008  12:36 PM ET

there is a reason losing teams keep losing

They need to debate what WR to add to their offense now that Thigpen has secured the starting job of the future. Why would you take the spread offense away if it is succsesful? You can get another rb, LJ is washed up and unhappy. C ya LJ, hello Thigpen.

December 10, 2008  12:59 PM ET

Jason Campbell should do quite nicely in KC

Kansas City needs to fire Herm Edwards and Carl Peterson... They need to go after Marty Schottenheimer for their new GM and Bill Cowher for their new head coach... Both have coached in Kansas City and have ties to the team... Then they should draft Sam Bradford because we are already running his offense... Trade Larry Johnson and Tony Gonzalez for more draft picks and continue building the offensive line and defense up with good young talent... Now you've got a new GM, Head Coach, QB, more talented draft picks and a newly renovated stadium... Plus you get the Chiefs fans back intrested with a new sense of hope and back to the old ways of filling the stadium and get us back to the days of the Red Sea... Its the perfect storm... Go Chiefs!!!

Keep Thigpen, get a lineman with the first pick. We all know that we miss Jared Allen. I think Brian Orakpo would be the best fit. I think Thigpen is great and PLEASE for the love of God get rid of Brodie Croyle

December 10, 2008  01:34 PM ET

Trade Lj and get a reciever in the draft. Maybe get a TE of the future too.

You sure you've given this some thought?

It doesn't matter as long as Herm is head coach.

I would not draft a quarterback if they are going to draft another spread type. I am not entirely sold on the spread offence in the pros. Good defensive coords. will find a way to attack it given time. If a great franchise QB who runs a pro style offence is available I would grab him, but if their isn't one I would stick to rebuilding the offensive line and try to find a great DE with speed that can sack the QB.

i cant say for sure that tyler is the franchise qb, but at least he deserves a chance nt year!!! compare his numbers with peyton manning's rookie yr numbers, or eli's, vick', brees'... the list goes on and on. not everybody is big ben that has success right away. i think that tyler did a hell of a job, and hes only gonna get better, he scrambles with the best of em. hes got a good arm, he reads blitzes very good. the only thin is that he became really int prone at the end of the yr, but thats only because the chiefs' offense became 1dimentional because they abandoned the running game. dont waste a high draft pic on a qb, get a quality DE ti fill jared allens shoes!!
