While general manager Jim Hendry said he spoke to representatives of three or four free agents Tuesday on the second day of baseball's winter meetings, the Jake Peavy rumors continue to take center stage. Hendry declined to comment on talk that Mark DeRosa was headed to Philadelphia for pitching prospects that would be sent to San Diego to complete a potential Peavy deal, but Phillies sources insisted a deal was in place and ready to go if the Cubs decide to pull the trigger with the Padres. While nothing appears imminent, the Cubs have done enough groundwork on the Peavy deal to pull it off quickly. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Jason Marquis would replace Sean Marshall in the package going to the Padres, with the Cubs eating more than half of his $9.8 million salary. The Phillies would send two pitching prospects to the Padres while acquiring DeRosa from the Cubs.

If they're not giving up Josh Vitters then get this deal done. All it may need is whoever the new owners might be to sign off on eating some of Marquis' contract.

and I bet you are a Yankee fan, so after paying $160 mil for the next Good Year blimp the Yankees still will not make the playoffs you still have so many holes to fill including 2 rotation spots

So, a team that has won its division each of the last to years is a poor organization and a bunch of losers? I can't believe how so many people use the PAST to describe the CURRENT condition of the team. Get a life.

Read my stuff Cubs fan. Im one of the best Yankee hater/killers there is. I just tell it like it is brother. Your team is the worst pro sport franchise in history and I lamented so. Your team is horrible and this signing will do nothing for you. NEXT?

So please enlighting us on which team you follow, are you a bandwagon jumper? Whatever team is on top for the year?

Hope the Cubs do get rid of Marquis even if they do have to eat half of his salary. Just another self-centered I am the greatest player in baseball guy.

Somebody please get jake! I'm tired of seeing so much crap about him!

December 10, 2008  09:53 AM ET

Getting swept was not a good showing and all cubs fans know that and are probably still ticked off about that, however to say that your team is horrible is ignorant, we had a very good year by cubs standards last year during the regular season and we choked in the playoffs, but if we do get peavy our rotation will be so sick that it is obvious that we will be the front runners to win the nl central, and most like the nl pennant as well, and original you still have yet to state your favorite team

Stop the presses stop the presses. First the Cubs need to do to close this deal is to put money in the governors pocket.

I still think the Cardinals should have went after this guy. They need pitching badly.

I think they are going to go after Fuentes. They can't afford both. Look for Ankiel to be dealt for a promising young starter like Phil Hughes.

So the Padres get 2 prospects and Jason Marquis for a Cy Young winner? Ouch...

December 10, 2008  10:16 AM ET

Looks like the Poopdres are gonna get stung. They would have gotten a much better package than this from Atlanta. KT and Alderson screwed around so much they in actuality screwed themselves and Poopdres fans. Not very competent leadership. They're getting what they deserve.

Well thanks for the answer, seems that he was a bit embarrassed to admit that, guess I would be too with a team that pays $10+ mil a year for a single A pitcher (Dontrelle)

When the Cubs win the world series, it will be ever so sweet !.

Get it done now. Why wait. Get it done and try to rebuild the other positions.
