Did Yankees overpay for overweight CC?

One baseball executive offered an observation early in this process that seemed to bear truth this morning with word of CC Sabathia's reported seven-year, $161 million deal: The Yankees will have to overpay to get any major free agent. They sure did. One general manager I passed outside in the hallway said in regards to the Sabathia deal, "I'm sorry, if that's true, it's just crazy. Seven years for a pitcher?" That's right. The Yankees have always had money to burn and have been burdened with big contracts that are eventually useless over time. But they are the Yankees. Sabathia is a terrific pitcher, perhaps the best in the game right now. He's lefthanded. Still, his big body worried every major suitor and others around the game even though he's been amazingly durable. "As he gets older, he's not gonna get skinnier," said the GM.

So whoever wrote this rumor is like really an idiot. They were just waiting for the dude to sign then they write some type of BS about the rich dude. He's 6'7"...get it....a freaking giant. Will he do better than Pettite? Is he that much bigger than Clemens? And for the GM who is whining....Get over it. You work for a slum-team that cannot afford or will not spend the money....the fan's money....on the "good" players. You put crapp on the field.

Did they overpay? Why is that "question" even in print here? I thought we covered this quite well here yesterday...

CC will win a lot of games during the regular season. When the post season begins, bet the farm on whoever he pitches against. Check it out!

December 11, 2008  07:23 AM ET

That's relative. Is he worth that much money to most other teams? No. Is he worth that much money to the Yankees, who can easily afford it? Yes. They desperately need this kind of ace if they are to keep their huge revenue streams.

December 11, 2008  07:50 AM ET

Of course they did. Step right up! Come see the stars! Pay at the door please.

December 11, 2008  08:14 AM ET

$30 to sit in the upper deck. You better have made CC this offer with only Joba and Wang, both coming off injuries in the rotation. My only worry is Joba and C.C. fighting at the buffet.
I have a feeling Lowe will be the 4th starter (Not a great option but he eats innings) and they'll probably make Petitte another offer for a year.

December 11, 2008  08:20 AM ET

The Yankees over paid Zito style for C.C. he will only be dominant for about 3 years maybe less, so they should use that opt out clause even if he hasnt shown a decline by then let him go and let some one else pay for his contract when he gets hurt and doesnt have the stuff.
CC is power pitcher, almost 29 years old, and about 100 lbs over weight. Ask Bartolo Colon how long the dominant stuff lasts when youre in that shape, "Round." Well let me predict at 31 he will get injured and at 32 he will attempt a come back but be unsuccessful because of an unexpected drop in velocity. Then he will struggle as a bellow average starter until age 34. Then he will be put in the bullpen in a set up role with hopes he will earn the closer job but instead he will regress and fall into the long relief slot until his 6 year $140M contract ends then he will be denied arbitration because of fear that he will accept and the club will be stuck with him for another year.

Agree 100%, over/under 750 posts for this thread?

It's a little known fact that Sabathia's contract pays him by the pound. The only scenario I can think of where he might have been overpayed is if they didn't make him take his shoes off when he weighed in.

Wang had a foot injury-
should not be a factor-
Joba- that is a valid concern

They paid plenty thats for damn sure.I would rather have had Burnett and Lowe plus Tex the CC.The fact hes a power throwing lefty is mighty intriguing though.

I agree with the assessment on Wang, I said yesterday his arm should be fine but almost a year without pitching concerns me.

Ask David Wells about the overweight thing. He pitched VERY effectively until 2003 when he was about 34. He also drank like a fish and had a bad back. Not issues with C.C

Only time will tell if CC is David Wells or Bartolo Colon.

It's nice to see the skankys drastically over pay for another player, unlike the Sox who sign players for less than what other clubs offer them. With cc and even if the **** sign Burnett they will still be a lousy team next season and will probably finish 3'rd in the division again.
