Cubs may send DeRosa to Twins

Mark DeRosa appears to be the main bargaining chip the Cubs are using to get the Jake Peavy deal done, but Philadelphia isn't the only team on their radar. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported Wednesday that the Cubs and Twins talked Tuesday about the possibility of sending DeRosa to the Twins for a couple of young pitching prospects, who would then be spun off to the Padres in a three-way deal that would bring Peavy to Chicago. A list of prospects would be given to the Cubs for the Padres approval before a deal would be made. DeRosa would likely play second in Minnesota, with young second baseman Alexi Casilla moving to short. DeRosa could also play third or the outfield for the Twins, who would use his versatility the same the Cubs have.

Good move by the Cubs. DeRosa is coming off a career year and he's not getting any younger.

I admit he would be a GREAT bargaining chip but you dont trade a guy that could fill in both corner outfields and 1st 2nd and 3rd base...and im not so sure if he can cover shortstop but hey..lets include that too..so basically he cant do center, pitch, or catch..id say thats one helluva bargaining chip..but one helluva insurance policy in case fontenot, lee, ramirez, soriano, and johnson get hurt...thats alot of good ppl eh?

Sounds like a good move for the Twins to me. DeRosa's a valuable player who seems to play hard & enjoy playing the game. I hated to see him leave Atlanta, but he's obviously only gotten better since then.

Get lost already, will you! Damn, you're so ****ing annoying!

Tony,

Do you go around kicking homeless men laying in alleyways? Maybe you like taking candy from babies. No, maybe you're preference is to call people "losers" when they lose a close relative or friend.

Either way, you have no idea what it's like to be a Cub fan, and whatever insecurity you are trying to cover up by constantly putting down the Cubs and their fans must be pretty shameful.

I think Towle's would rather talk about dealing than actually deal. He has no leverage because he's admitted he needs to cut payroll and Peavy, the obvious candidate, has a no trade clause so he's limited the field. The Cubs have leverage because they don't really need Peavy, although he would be a good addition. Still, Towle tries to dictate the terms and get back more than he's giving up. A good trade should be a win/win, but when one side is desperate, as the Padres are, they have to accept a win/lose trade.

We better chat when the deal is done insted of speculating "Brian Roberts Style" like back in early 2008.

If this deal isn't set by tomorrow, let's focus on getting the left handed batter/outfielder and move on with what we have.

The Cubs have admitted that they can not get do the Peavy Trade. Cubs are in a dire financial situation until they get bought. Sorry Cubbie fans but they be become sellers rather than buyers real fast.

Good God My Statement should have read like this:The Cubs have admitted that they can not do the Peavy Trade. Cubs are in a dire financial situation until they get bought. Sorry Cubbie fans but they may become sellers rather than buyers real fast.

There will always be a group of players that can field multiple positions but few with the hitting consistency and power that Derosa displayed. I'd be hard pressed to find a more valuable player for the Cubs last year. Whether it was playing for an injured Soriano, a slumping Fukadoma or spelling a rest for Lee and Ramirez, DeRosa always performed well. Yes his value is at its peak but trading DeRosa is more than just loosing a .280/25/90 guy.

December 11, 2008  05:19 PM ET

PLEASE - DON'T TRADE DEROSA!!! No matter what the Cubs are doing I can watch because he plays the game the way it should be played.

December 11, 2008  06:06 PM ET

Forget about Peavy. Derosa's too valuable to lose for a starter we don't need. Cubs need two lefties, a solid leadoff hitter and a middle reliever. Get what we need, not what Towers is selling!

So, Basically.... he's a good utility player.... I wouldn't get all that twisted about losing him..... you can find a replacement utility player ....

any Twins fan worth his salt knows this wont happen

Precisely. While it would have been awesome to get Peavy, at the end of the day, pitching is just a luxury for us. We already have a pretty solid rotation. I just wonder who Hendry will acquire.

I wasn't thinking you'd trade him for Peavy. I've thought that deal was a fantasy from the very first. I do think he's you best chip for getting that left handed bat that Lou wants so badly.

Does anyone else see the irony that what you want so badly, we have in spades. We need to deal left handed outfielders to balance our line up. Ludwick may bat right handed, but the his splits are those of a lefty. It probably has to do with that bats left, throws right weirdness. There's a trade which is even less likely than the Peavy deal.

* he's your best chip.

December 11, 2008  10:40 PM ET

I like the trade for the twinkies if DeRosa can just hit what he did last year at the third place position. As long as we don't give a starting pitcher I am all for it!

That is so true as much as I would like it I agree we won't pull the trigger

Sorry but a good utility player is much more valuable then a good 1st baseman, 2nd baseman, 3rd baseman or outfielder. Utility in DeRosa's sence doesn't mean batting .240 with 200 abs.
