Burnett deciding between Braves, Yankees

The Red Sox never seemed fully invested in talks for A.J. Burnett, so it should it come as no surprise that the competition for the pitcher now seems to have come down to two teams: the Yankees and Braves. According to a baseball source, the Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays have been all but officially eliminated for the pitcher's services. Discussions with Burnett now are focusing on two teams - the Braves and Yankees, the latter of which has agreed to terms with CC Sabathia on a seven-year, $161 million contract. If the Yankees land Burnett, it could significantly affect their interest in Derek Lowe, though it is not out of the question that New York could sign Sabathia, Burnett and Lowe. Agent Scott Boras, who represents Lowe, had a meeting scheduled with the Yankees tonight. Boras, of course, also represents free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira, in whom the Yankees also have interest.

I fully expect the Yankees to sign Sabathia, Burnett, and Lowe.

December 11, 2008  06:52 AM ET

Having said that, it wouldn't surprise me if the Mets swoop in and sign one of the remaining two.

I pray the Yanks get Burnett, the fact that it may eliminate Lowe is worth it alone.

I dont understand what the hold up is with Burnett, he has a 80 mil/5yr offer on the table from the Yanks and that's the most he is going to get from anyone

December 11, 2008  08:38 AM ET

Well, screw it, looks like we're back to our old form, sign Burnett, Lowe and Manny too, while we're dumping off young talent for old players past their prime. I think they're bringing John Kruk in for a physical this week, too.

December 11, 2008  08:48 AM ET

As a Yankee fan-
I really hope he picks Atl.
I cannot look at hiim sitting on the bench for the first
4 years of the deal- hurt-
then winning 20 games as a 39 year old expecting another contract

Guess you didn't read the MLB.com article that said the Braves offered 80mil/5y...

After the signing of CC to go along with Wang and Joba... I do not see how AJ wouldnt take more $$$ and the chance at a few rings along the way.

Who would the Yankees be dumping to get CC, Burnett, Lowe or Manny? So we gave up Melky... that is just to make room for AAA Prospect Austin Jackson to play CF in 2010

I was probably unclear. I was refeffing to the Cano trade that happened last night, and how it is just like old times, abandoning the young for old players past their primes. I do like your take on the Cano trade, but I would have rather seen Gardener in center next season than what we got for Cano. Jackson could have come in and played RF.

Wait for it...

Go to Atlanta, PLEASE! His #'s will be so much better and the Evil Empire is not where you want to be.

I still don't want to see him screw us for the first 4 years

Good Riddance, the first time that landmine brings his 4 plus ERA to Toronto (if his monty burns style body holds up) I am there to watch that d'bag get lit up. NY enjoy the damaged goods.

For everyone who cried that the Yanks were trying to buy the WS from 2001 to 2008 you can now admit you were wrong. THIS is trying to buy the WS lol.

December 11, 2008  09:37 PM ET

Seriously - who isnt trying to buy their WS nowadays. The Red Sux did. The Angels/Cubs/Mutts/fill the blank try...
All in all, this guy may be a step above Carl Pavano. He had two good yrs in the past 7 - both contract walk years (ok, technically one was an opt-out yr). He has stuff, but his body wont stand up to a 5yr contract. Let the freakin braves take him and deal with the consequences.
