Unhappy Penn State QB to transfer

Pat Devlin has given up on Penn State. Devlin, the all-time passing leader in Pennsylvania scholastic history who stayed in-state to play college football, is transferring, the Nittany Lions announced last night. The former Downingtown East star lost an off-season competition for the starter's job to Daryll Clark. Devlin was a seldom-used backup this season. According to a source close to Paterno, Devlin, along with his parents, Mark and Connie, visited with the 81-year-old coach on Monday to express their displeasure over their son's situation. The Devlins brought with them a list of issues they had about Penn State's handling of their son. By the end of the meeting, Pat Devlin had informed Paterno that he was leaving, the source said. With one game to play, however, Devlin's decision over whether he would play in the Jan. 1 Rose Bowl against Southern Cal was left dangling. Yesterday, according to another source close to the team, Paterno asked Devlin if he had reached a verdict. The sophomore said he had not. Paterno made the decision for him, and by the end of the day, Devlin's locker was cleaned out. Mark Devlin said last night that he was unaware of his son's plans to transfer.

I understand he wants to play, but his timing is lousy. You would think he would wait until after the Bowl game. Nothing to lose and a lot to gain. He could end up going in. Not now. Guess he did not want to wait until his Senior year to shine for the Lions.

This is a huge loss for Penn State. He has a big time arm. I know that PSU was smoking MSU at the time, but did anyone see that strike that he threw to Butler on that long touchdown? Big time throw. Whoever gets him in a year will certainly get a good starting QB from the start.

Clark had an awesome year. He played exceptional. But there is still a part of me that wishes that Devlin would have gotten the start at the beginning of the year. Devlin's arm with the talented and experienced receivers that PSU had would have made for quite a show. But perhaps he wouldn't have been as much as a leader as Clark was.

Reading the whole article does make ya wonder though. Clark was Jay Paterno's boy, Devlin looked like he wasnt. Jay Paterno probably had a big role in making the decision in the beginning of the season. Just makes ya wonder.

Just like the great QB that left back in the early 80's that transfered to WVU and now has 2 super bowl Rings. Joe Pa has to go the old school ways are over get someone new to run that school before it falls apart

It might have more to do with timing of school schedules rather than bowl schedules. By the time the Rose Bowl was played, his enrollment options at many other schools could be limited until the fall.

Gutsy move by Paterno...Clark has already has had his head rattled this year from being hit (he was NOT right versus Iowa). USC isn't going to let up. Now what safety net does PSU have? Lets just hope Clark stays healthy through the hits he may take against USC, because if Clark goes out...it is OVER.

Great, another Hostetler.

This leaves open an opportunity for a high profile recruit.

I wish Joe would clean out Jay Pa's locker.

Penn State is recruiting two QBs in Newsome and Boyd. My guess is they land one of them but crazier things have happened. Penn State will be just fine at QB for next year but what happens after Clark leaves?

So Daryll Clark isn't the right pick at QB? I guess Penn St going to the Rosebowl, finishing in the top 5 and being relevant again are just small issues that do not matter to you?

I would assume he wouldn't want to transfer to another 1-A program and have to sit out for a season, so look for Devlin to be at some 1-AA school next season.

Great timing... Now its up to Clark...And apparently only Clark... To handle the best defense in the nation... New Years day could be ugly.... Real ugly

so... wheres all the **** at saying penn state sucks because a player wants to transfer?

December 11, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Penn State doesn't suck.

The North Cuba Tropical Depressions suck - maybe this QB is what is needed to "turn the corner" from Suckington to Suckvegas. You should try to land him. Couldn't hurt since you already SUCK!

Whiner.

Real classy move, cleaning out the kids locker. Did Joe inform the kids parents first, or even the kid that he had made the decision? Apparently not, way to handle a kid Joe, you are a freaking dooshbag for handling the situation this way. Then again, when you're JoePA you can pretty much do whatever you want.

You are right, New Year's Day could get ugly because the best defense in the nation is on Clark's side in that game. He is playing against the second best. Penn State is going to win the Rose Bowl because they have the better defense, offensive line, quarterback and special teams.

Penn State's defense is better than USC's? Is that some kind of joke??

I rather like the enthusiasm myself...nothing wrong with that...
