05:51 AM ET 12.11 | At 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, police and paramedics entered a mobile home in San Bernardino and discovered the body of Matt Cassel's father, Greg, a devastating trauma for Cassel's family and yet another shock to the Patriots. Greg Cassel's death, at 57, threw into question whether his son will play Sunday against the Raiders in Oakland, a must-win game for the Patriots in their late-season push for a playoff berth. Cassel did not participate in practice yesterday at San Jose State University, leaving the team to be with his family in Southern California. Coach Bill Belichick did not have a timetable for Cassel's return and did not say whether he expected Cassel would play Sunday. A spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coro ner's Department said the preliminary findings indicate Mr. Cassel, a former Hollywood script writer, died in his home of natural causes.

A very sad thing.

But if you can muster the strength and
tear a page out of the Bret Favre playbook.....

Go for it!!!

Died of natural causes at 57? I'm sure theres more to it but may he rest in peace.

Condolenses....Win one for Poppa Cassel.. Services will be Monday so Its uncertain if Cassel will play, but if not O'Connell you better be up for the challenge...3rd rounder lets see what you've got...

There doesn't necessarily have to be more too it. People die of heart attacks and strokes at much younger ages than 57.

All the best thoughts to Matt and his family. I'd love to see him try and play but I totally understand if he feels he can't do it.

December 11, 2008  07:39 AM ET

Hope he's able to play. That's a tough situation.

December 11, 2008  07:49 AM ET

Even some NYers realixe that its just a game
my Condolances to him and his family

Heart attacks before age 60 tend to be fatal. Not enough collateral circulation has developed unless you are exercising aerobically. Block one artery and bam.. no myocardial tissue left.
I hope Matt and his family the best of wishes.

How awful for him. I will say a prayer for him and his family today..Wow, so young.

Watching that Favre game after his father passed was so difficult so I know if Cassel plays, I won't be watching that one. Too hard to stomach.

December 11, 2008  07:59 AM ET

My dad died at age 55. How he lived his life contributed heavily to his demise. It's hard to say "tear a page out of the Favre playbook". Everyone reacts differently to these situations. I will hold my thoughts out of respect for his loss.

December 11, 2008  08:08 AM ET

Matt If you play more power to you. God bless you and your family its tough losing dad

December 11, 2008  08:16 AM ET

Wow. This is a tough. I know if I was in this same situation I'm not so sure if I could play. Even if he does is it the right move for the team. Cassel will obviously not be 100% mentally.

Keep your head up Cassel... Do what's best for you, not for a "game"...

December 11, 2008  08:24 AM ET

Sad, but no way he sits.

I agree. I can't see him sitting on Sunday. This is kinda a win one for the gipper and I hope he does it and plays well. Condolences to the Cassel family.

December 11, 2008  08:30 AM ET

I don't think he'll sit. Sad news, if Cassel plays this week, it may be the one time in recent memory I'll be rooting for the Pats. Good luck.

December 11, 2008  08:32 AM ET

Man, he looks a lot like Brady in that picture.

My father died of natural causes at 56. Don't be so quick to draw conclusions.
