The Yankees reeled in this winter's biggest fish with a seven-year contract, but don't be surprised if his name appears on the free-agent market again long before 2015. Sources told the Daily News that the seven-year, $161 million contract that CC Sabathia will sign with the Yankees will contain an opt-out clause that will allow the lefthander to become a free agent after the first three years of the contract.

Good morning Cat. I see you're up and about. I got to get out of here by 8 this am so I will be brief. I'm looking at the opt-out as another incentive. Even if he goes his way thereafter, yanks can rebid and/or pick up another $ 23 mil or so in payroll savings. It's all good. Have a nice morning.

As a long time Brewer Fan, I have a lot of good things to say about CC. However, his Post Season Playoff record sucks! I hope he does as well for the NY Yankees, the Neocon Major
League Baseball franchise!

Unless he is terrible he is going to opt out. What player doesnt if they are doing well?

the Neocon Major League Baseball franchise. Wow. That's great. Why didn't I think of that. So that means that the YES Network is the Fox News of Yankees baseball coverage then. great comment dougsomers.

Good Move for both. For CC, not only does he get to opt out if he hates New york, but he can also opt out and get another big payday. for the Yanks as long as they win at least 1 world series with him in three years it will worth it.

December 11, 2008  07:52 AM ET

Well i guess we will see in 3 years just how good of a deal the Yanks made this could be really great or extremely bad but at least if he doesnt perform or gets injured we wont be stuck with another long contract

Its a player Option, so if CC soks but wants to continue to get paid, He doesnt have to opt out. the yankees can only hope this works out or else it will be a loooooong 7 years

I'm betting that's a player option - not a team option.

If it was a team option his agent needs to be fired

December 11, 2008  08:08 AM ET

I wonder if this means that Sabathia can opt out in any year after he's completed three years, or if he's got one shot after three years and if he does not opt out he's in for the next four.

December 11, 2008  08:11 AM ET

So if he's great he can cash in again and if he stinks the Yanks get to enjoy his current contract.
That's capitalism for ya. The Yanks left themselves without starters and needed him this badly.

Well, either he's stuck with them, or they're stuck with him for three years at least! That can be a long time if either or both are unhappy. I wish him no ill-will ... he will make this upcoming season interesting. I'm looking forward to it!

even if he's unhappy- he ain't opting out and leaving 100mil on the table

The Yankees over paid Zito style for C.C. he will only be dominant for about 3 years maybe less. So that opt out option is great for them lets just hope their are smart enough to use it and let some one else pay CC when he gets injured and his velocity drops.
CC is power pitcher, almost 29 years old, and about 100 lbs over weight. Ask Bartolo Colon how long the dominant stuff lasts when youre in that shape, "Round." Well let me predict at 31 he will get injured and at 32 he will attempt a come back but be unsuccessful because of an unexpected drop in velocity. Then he will struggle as a bellow average starter until age 34. Then he will be put in the bullpen in a set up role with hopes he will earn the closer job but instead he will regress and fall into the long relief slot until his 6 year $140M contract ends then he will be denied arbitration because of fear that he will accept and the club will be stuck with him for another year.

Hey....

I THINK I heard that he has a series of options...so after three years, he's year-to-year on his terms. At least that's what I think I heard, half asleep, from SportsCenter.

What it means is that CC will opt out after 3 years, ask for more money,...thank Hank will say no and give him a deadline. After which, CC will chuckle, and pimpslap Hank. This is where it gets interesting.... Hank will say negotiations are closed and CC will start to add a new wing to his New Rochelle, NY compound. Hank will publicize that they have CC right where they want him and sign him to a new 10 year deal for 30 million dollars.
