Bryant lashes out at Emmitt, Dilfer
Many in the media have described WR Antonio Bryant as a player with "baggage." But never has Bryant reacted as strongly as Wednesday, when he shot back at ESPN analysts Emmitt Smith and Trent Dilfer. "I'm still trying to figure out what all this baggage is I'm supposed to have," Bryant said. "I'm a real person. And that bull Emmitt said on the TV about 'Get my life right' and Trent Dilfer mentioned something about getting my life right outside of football -- don't be a hypocrite." Dilfer and Bryant were with the 49ers in 2006. Smith and Bryant were with the Cowboys in 2002, Bryant's rookie year. In on-air comments, Dilfer said: "He's got immense talent. Could be one of the best receivers in the NFL if he can get a handle on some of the off-the-field emotional issues." Smith suggested Bryant's inability to hold his tongue was the cause of his troubles in Dallas and San Francisco, who jettisoned him after run-ins with coaches. Bryant seemed to suggest both acted friendly to him in person, but he felt betrayed by the criticism, regardless of its validity.

It's a matter of record that Bryant has been a malcontent in at least two of his NFL stops! This is only news to Bryant himself! Shut up and catch footballs!

Trent Dilfer could have been one of the best QBs in this league. If he didn't suck so much.

Just when you thought he had matured and could realize some f his talent in this league, he starts yapping - complaining about media criticism.... doe sh enot realize that is what analysts do?
dumb-dumb... he'll be done by end of next season...

Dilfer is the last person who should open his pie hole about any other player in the league... He is a former scrub who is bitter because of his mediocrity. No one will ever respect him as an analyst.

Dilfer was indeed a scrub who was lucky enough to be on a super bowl team. Emmit was a great player who is now a lousy analyst. So why does Bryant care what either one says about him? He needs to just play his game and ignore all of this. This must be a very slow-news day today.

so it's true...you're just pissed about the fact that they shared it with people...gotcha.
I'm really tired of these athletes getting annoyed that reporters are "talking behind their backs." Guess what guys, if it's on national TV...it's not behind your back.

Interesting. I wonder how many players listen to what commentators say about them. I for one would not listen to anyone, just knowing that a good number of ex-jocks are really not that good on TV / Radio, and often gravitate to saying controversial things, just to make a splash.
Remember Tiki? I don't think Smith and Dilfer have much of a future here

ESPN has to stop giving every ex-player a job on TV. Trent Dilfer says so many things that should get him fired immediately. These players have to just laugh at getting criticized by a guy who couldn't get his own career right. I love hearing him criticize QB's. He should have taken his own advice when he played and he wouldn't have sucked so bad.

somehow bryant was the number 1 ranked wide receiver in college. that is before he ran a 4.68 for nfl scouts while complaining about everything from the weather to the time of day.
any receiver not named michael clayton that is somewhat agressive can excell in the west coast offense.
next......

Consider the sources Antonio. Actually Dilfer isn't that bad of an analyst, but Emmitt is an idiot. Why didn't he just go off quietly into the sunset; maybe everyone will forget what an arrogant a - hole he is and his legacy would be secure.

I'd rather he rag on the press than his own players. (ahem TO) Somebody needs to spout off on the press, as they create more discontent than anybody in the league (except TO). Analysis these days has nothing to do with X's and O's, it's all "he said this or that about him or them". Especially ESPN. They spent an entire 30 minute program last night covering the TO incident. Very sad.

Agreed, Emmit Smith is a horrible analyst. He never says anything; it's just "blah, blah, blah." And Dilfer, well he's Dilfer. Here's what I don't get. We say it's an analysts job to make comments like this. Really? Are these talking heads there to fabricate stories they may know nothing about? Stick to analyzing football and quit with the color commentary. As far as I can tell Bryant has matured. He spent a year out of football and the Bucs gave him another chance. He's been outstanding all year for this team. Doesn't it stand to reason that a guy who is really making strides as a person and player would be a bit miffed when former teammates, who are trying to call themselves analysts, take jibs at him? Couldn't they talk about his progress as a player fighting for a spot and winning it? Is anyone else seeing a trend with these so-called analysts? It's a bit overkill and mostly all hype.

"WR Antonio Bryant
(6-1 1/8, 188, 4.6) Pittsburgh
Notes: Third-year junior. Floridian who came to Pittsburgh to play right away in a pro-style passing offense run by Walt Harris, a former NFL QB coach. Freshman All-American in 1999, when he started 8-of-11 games and caught 51 passes for 841 yards and six touchdowns. Despite being suspended for the opener allegedly for the unauthorized use of a university phone access card, came back to win All-America honors and the Biletnikoff Award as the top receiver in the nation in 2000. He caught 68-1,302-11 in 10 games and returned 16 punts for 181 yards. Led the nation in receiving yards per game, had 27 catches of 25-plus yards and eight of 50-plus. In January of ???01, he had a dispute with police over a traffic ticket. In March he missed conditioning drills due to travel for awards events. Bryant was suspended in April for fighting. Then, in late July of ???01, he was arrested and charged with using a stolen credit card to buy a plane ticket (worth more than $1,000) to attend a children???s event in Miami. However, in early August, all charges against him were dropped on the basis that he didn???t know the ticket was obtained fraudulently. Harris was fully supportive of Bryant, but made note of the fact that Bryant should have obtained travel through the proper university channels. On the field, Bryant had a disappointing, injury-filled junior year but turned it up a notch at the end to let scouts know he was ready for them. Despite spraining both his ankles and suffering an Achilles injury, Bryant caught 42-659-9 and then snatched 7-101-2 to win the MVP trophy at the Tangerine Bowl, though his ankle almost kept him out of the game.
Positives: Tall, with a big wingspan and good jumping ability. Natural receiver with soft hands and great ball skills, body control and timing. Almost always comes down with jump-balls and is very effective in the red zone. Makes tough catches look easy and makes some superhuman catches. Has supreme confidence in his ability and will not be intimidated. Beats all types of coverages and makes big plays. Can return punts. Has good playing speed, knows how to use that speed and can get deep.
Negatives: Has a very high opinion of himself and may have some issues or baggage. Has a lot of growing up to do and does not seem to realize he can???t keep getting away with things because he is a football star. Has dropped some balls because he wanted to look cool and catch it in a nonchalant manner.
Summary: In many ways will remind you of Cris Carter when Carter was in college, but Bryant is not as big or acrobatic as Carter. And unless Bryant really grows up and matures, he may never realize his potential."
