Favre: I expect us to make playoffs

Despite a two-game losing streak and a real fear by fans that the season could spiral toward a tortuous, same-old-Jets ending, Brett Favre stepped behind a lectern and delivered a declaration. "I expect us to make the playoffs," he said Wednesday. The statement revealed more about Favre's confidence than his psychic powers. Favre speaks almost exclusively without filter, holds nothing back, whether he is throwing deep balls into double coverage or making comments that venture into Joe Namath's Land of the Guarantee. Favre said he expected his teammates to realize that even at 8-5, their goals and expectations remain unchanged.

Hey Brett! Save your talk until your throw 3 picks in your first playoff game, if you make the playoffs.

hah. so true.

Yes, but this is New York, not feel good, gosh darn, pass the cheddar Green Bay. Don't make the playoffs and see how much love you get in the Big Apple.

I can't wait till the jets DON'T make the playoffs... The Farvre can retire like he was supposed to... The problem here is that Bret just isn't that smart... Football is all he knows and he'll be lost without it... He has no other goals in life...

I am so sick of analysts unfair comparisons between Rogers and Farve this season... and also ho wthey keep saying how well Rogers is playing and that the defence is to blame for the Packers woes.

First of all, Farve had to learn a whole new offence with all new personnel... Rogers has worked within the same offence and most players for what - 3-4 years?? you can't compare the 2 of them fairly based on the facts...

And to say the defence is the problem?.... maybe some blame but the entire team is different now that Farve is gone... the competition approaches them different... they are not afraid of Rogers... and thus the Ryan Grant poor season... the other teams game plan different now...

Farve led that team to 13-3 and quite honestly, should have been in the superbowl...

Rogers is a decent QB, but to hear all these people say that the Pack made the right choice is a joke.... the NFL is about winning - NOW!..... and they f*#ked up big time ... they forced Farve to make a decison/retirement announcement when he clearly told them that he wasn't ready to make that decision - but understood that they needed to start planning for the next season right after the 07/08 season ended...

I hope the Jets do make the playoffs.... I would think that teams would not be thrilled about playing a team with Farve on it in a playoff scenerio...

I've always hated the "Win Now" idea. Why win now to sacrifice future years of success...doesn't make sense to me.

And Fonz, the Packers did make the right choice. They needed to see what they had in Rodgers now rather when Mr. Tractor Man finally decides to retire. Mr. Tractor Man has been jerkin the chain of Packer fans for years with the "will he, won't he" discussion. I doubt the Packers pressured him in any way...they may have inquired and implored for a decision, but frankly, its warranted. If they knew he was or wasn't coming back, they could form a decision around Favre's response. Since Favre said "Well, if I had to make a decision right now, I wouldn't" so the Packers had to move under the assumption that he wasn't going to be back and the retirement enforced that need to plan around him not being there.

Favre is a big, stupid jerk...and this comes from a diehard Packer fan that loved him for years up until the off-season prior to the start of this year.

Hope they make it, makes for good football and good press; supports the league.

December 11, 2008  09:46 AM ET

The Packers aren't losing because of Aaron Rodgers. He is one of the top performing players on the team. I miss Favre as much as any Packer fan, but I don't think anyone can say whether it was a right or wrong choice yet. Just as with draft picks, you can make assumptions and guesses, but that's all they will be. I think Rodgers has potential that we have yet to see and Favre will be retired soon. The NFL is about winning now, but even with Favre this year the defense still would have lost it more than likely, I can't see how Favre playing would have made it better, and quite possibly could have made it worse with interceptions and keeping a decimated defense on the field more. Rodgers has had some ups and downs, but he seems very much like a rhythm player. You'll notice that sometimes he makes 3 or 4 bad throws, but once he makes one or two, he usually goes on streaks and produces good drives. The offense is not the problem at all except that the O-line may need some shoring up depending on whether or not Tauscher is around next season.

But I digress...a lot.

The Jets still have a good shot at making the playoffs, though I can't see them going very far unless they step it up. And just as much as Favre can throw three picks and lose a game he can also pick apart defenses when he's on. Haters of Favre are typically have QB envy.

Ditto. You're exactly right.

There are Packer fans and there are Favre fans (now Jet fans by default I suppose). I am a Packer fan till the end and I support my QB, Aaron Rodgers.

December 11, 2008  09:59 AM ET

And ..... we expect you to retire! And stay retired!

December 11, 2008  10:47 AM ET

I expect to be a millionaire someday too. How's that for expectations, Favre?

December 11, 2008  10:52 AM ET

And I expect you to lose, quickly

I watch 2 teams in green now. Still love the Packers and have always said they stole Rodgers in that draft. He has played very well and loses can't be blamed on him. Still love to watch Favre play. I thought it would be wierd but Brett is still Brett. Entertaining on the field.

December 11, 2008  12:30 PM ET

Rodgers has been almost as entertaining to watch. He has shown that same fire and grit that packer fans love and have come to expect at the QB position.

December 11, 2008  01:03 PM ET

Brett what bar you gonna watch them at?

December 11, 2008  03:30 PM ET

I will be surprised if they don't make the play offs ... they won' get deep but they'll make it.

December 11, 2008  03:35 PM ET

I sure hope so Brett. But first the Jets gotta stop losing to lowly teams like the 49ers.

December 11, 2008  04:15 PM ET

you know what would be great? if chad came back to town and beat the jets and made the playoffs. it be a swift kick in the nads to all the people that didnt think pennington could do it. the new york media would also crucify mangini, favre, and whoever else made that decision

New Guy here....gotta agree! Brett/Toto, you're not in Kansas anymore!!! (And yes I realize Green Bay is in Wisconsin, not Kansas before I get brutalized) The city wants to know what have you done for me lately.
