The Texas Rangers are interested in free-agent pitcher Randy Johnson, club president Nolan Ryan said Wednesday. General manager Jon Daniels and Barry Meister, one of Johnson's agents, confirmed the sides met earlier this week. No further meetings are scheduled, and no offer has been made. Johnson, 45, could earn somewhere between $6 million to $8 million on a one-year deal.

The Unit will not necesarily help the rangers win anything, but will sell some tickets as he approaches the milestones. good move for the rangers.

Do not forget Carl Pavano

Stay in the NL you lanky ****. You can't handle the big boys league anymore, i think you've proven that already.

GPWYANKEE-
He won 17 games in both years he was here with a 3.79 era in year 1...if you think that the worst signing the Yankees EVER signed, you're sorely mistaken.

Carl Pavano, Kei Igawa, Hideki Irabu...just to name a few who were/are MUCH MUCH worse then Randy wining 17

Randy brought nothing to the team in my opinion.Comparing the money we had tied up in Randy and the disruption he was to the team i find it a loss.Igawa and Irabu were minimal investments as compared to Johnson. He pitched 225 innings year one and 205 innings year 2.Our bullpen had as much to do with holding those leads and our offense was certainly scoring at that point. His Era was 5.00 year 2 by the way.

Neverless, Pavano did win 18 games before coming to NY. About 2 months into his contract the wheels came off. He was having martial troubles, he crashed his car with his mistress in it, he had a broken rib and didn't tell the Yanks, etc... He had some crazy personal issues coming to a head around the time he got blown off the mound by the Red Sox. After that, he just crumbled and things got progressively worse until he flinagled the TJ surgery. Effectively, that removed the expectation of fulfilling the contract and he got started in the rehab. Seems like he collected his head a bit during that time away and came back just in time to pitch for another contract.

Pavano is officially the worst FA signing in the history of the NYY. Worse than Melido Perez, worse than Danny Tartabull, worse than Kevin Brown and worse than the fat toad. We're talking about 40 mil for a guy who was too chicken sheet to pitch after one really bad outing vs the Red Sox.

9 posts, apparently Texas is the only one interested in this idiot

December 11, 2008  12:18 PM ET

Texas is just doing what they do every year. Find some washed up past his prime superstar to lure a few fans into the ballpark. We never contend with the real free agent pitchers, and always trade away our young arms for bats. I'm at a loss as to why Texas, in its decades of existence, has never realized that you can't win without pitching. We have a crap rotation every single year, and um... we lose every single year.

I'm a Ranger fan and I'm not interested in this deal either ... not that I matter ... just saying ...

December 11, 2008  12:45 PM ET

WOOHOO - another worthless short-term deal.

Hey Nolan - tell me when we can get a HOF pitcher IN their prime not past it. This is typical short-term mentality from the **** of Ranger management.

225 in year 1 is pretty damn good. Year 2 he had a drop off, and im not trying to say that he was a good pick up...just not as bad as you are saying. To call him the worst FA signing for the Yanks is just wrong.

17-8, 225 innings pitched, 211 Strike outs, 47 walks looks pretty good to me...like I said there was a drop off in year 2 but...17-11, 205, 172, 60...is not terrible when compared to Igawa, Irabu, Pavano, etc.

Minimal investment compared to igawa-$46 mil (contract + posting fee), Irabu $17 mil, Pavano- $40 mil, Randy- $26 mil...not too much of a difference, but worth the extra cash if you ask me.

I agree that it didn't work out with the Big Unit (maybe the worst nickname in sports), but it was not the worst ever...thats just an argument u'll never win.

Hasn't this guy been 45 years old since 2002? Seriously, WAY past his sell-by date. Good luck with that one. I hope the Big Eunich can win a few games for you, it'd be nice to see the Rangers contend again.

December 11, 2008  02:35 PM ET

Texas remember the Jason Jennings experiment and how that went?

December 11, 2008  02:54 PM ET

If you are a LHP and you have a MLB resume, you get to play a loong time.

Dear Randy:

Every man has his time, and you need to learn to call it quits.

Love,

Keith Richards

They don't have cameras in Texas, do they?

December 11, 2008  04:36 PM ET

The Rangers could sell seats yes and it doesn't hurt if Johnson hits 300 wins in a Ranger uniform. Why the hatred, especially from you Yanker fans? How does 17 wins each season in a Yanker uniform make him "the worst signing ever". Geez. Did anybody on your team win more than 17 games last season except Mussina? Get over yourselves.
