Brewers-Yankees deal to include Cameron
The Yankees have found their center fielder for 2009, as they are set to send Melky Cabrera to Milwaukee for veteran outfielder Mike Cameron on Thursday, according to two major league sources. The Yankees have been saying that Cabrera and Brett Gardner would compete for the center field job, but the acquisition of Cameron gives them a veteran presence at the position.

WHY? Cameron is getting up there in age. I guess NY kinda digs the old folks.

He's also right handed. They need more balance in their lineup with Giambi gone and Matsui being so injury prone. The stadium was built for left handed power. Now they have only part time left handed power.

Melky had showed them that he really couldn't hit. He is a switch hitter but most of his approximately 260 life time average was from the left side. I believe if he was a better hitter as a righty rather than as a lefty they may have kept him. Above average fielder with a good arm but no power at the plate. So ok Cameron a veteran right handed hitter for more balance in the line up. Average is is about the same versus Melky, but with more power. Their young Farm hand CF is about another year or two away.

A GREAT Trade for the Brewers! Cameron will lead the Yankees in Strikeouts, and he is vastly
overrated on Defense.

Not a good Move for the Bombers. Cameron is a has been. The yankees dont need to be getting players for the sake of their names.

Melky is only 24 years old, and he's under the team's control for another 2 (3?) years. I don't believe Cameron's going to give you significantly more at this point than Melky, and he costs A LOT more. I think the Brewers were smart to make this move.

Wow. They sure gave up on Melky quick.

Typical Cashman move, out of left field. Can't say as though I'm not disappointed that they didn't get a catcher or even some farm pitching for Melky. I would have preferred to put Gardener out there. Starting to look like the critics are right - the "youth movement" may have been nothing but hot air.

I like Melky's chances to develop into a nice player outside of NY.

Anyone still talking about what a stud Melky Cabrera is? He going in exchange for a 35 year old, 175K whiff machine who's numbers will never be confused with the stratospheric numbers some overzealous fans had Melky achieving. Anything else in the pipeline? No offense Atro.

When the trade was originally proposed and involved multiple Yankees I was adverse to it. I am not a big Cameron fan. However, I am sure that Cameron was not the Yanks first choice but Cashman found out that there were no other viable options. We all would easily prefer guys like McLouth, Kemp, et al. Yet, I am sure that Cashman determined that guys like that could not be had. As such, while Cameron is not a stud, this is a good deal if these are the only players involved because the fact is Cameron is a notable upgrade over Melky. Neither are good hitters, but Cameron hits for substantial power and is better and getting on base. Melky was never projected to be much of a major leaguer and has not been one. We are lucky that he had enough value to be traded. Cameron is only a one year investment and then is an FA. If he leaves, he might be worth a draft pick to us. So this deal is good if unspectacular.
