Suns trade leaves Nash drained

The acquisition of Jason Richardson crammed a lot of excitement into a small visitors locker room that the Suns inhabited for their Staples Center visit Wednesday night. But excuse Steve Nash if he can't share the glee. It cost him his best friend, Raja Bell. Just like Nash was separated from Dirk Nowitzki by Dallas owner Mark Cuban's unwillingness to match a Suns offer in 2004, Nash has been split from his basketball buddy again by a basketball decision. The Suns traded Bell, Boris Diaw and Sean Singletary on Wednesday to Charlotte for Jason Richardson, Jared Dudley and a second-round draft pick. Before Nash said a word about how he felt about the trade, his flat play with a dead expression said it all during the Suns' shorthanded 115-110 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night. "It's tough," Nash said after a big exhale. "While I'll welcome my new teammates with open arms, it's tough when you lose your best friend. It's tough when you lose two of your best buddies. It's tough and it hurts. It's tough." Nash was boarding the team bus at the hotel Wednesday afternoon when he received a friend's text message, reading, "It's a tough business." He called Bell, who was already at the airport because he didn't want to wake Nash from his usual game-day afternoon nap. Nash seemed as if he was blindsided by the news. "A little bit, yeah," said Nash, searching for words he couldn't find. "Um, a little bit, yeah."

Wow, this is crazy. This trade could make or break the Suns. You get instant offense in Richardson but you lose some defense and unity in Raja Bell. Probably both sides got what they want. Larry Brown got reunited w/ Raja Bell from their 76ers NBA finals days. Richardson can score and can be the Joe Johnson of the early Suns' year. Whoever made the decision for the Suns, either Porter or Kerr, better hope that the trade works out or else their job is on the line.

I think the suns got the better end of the deal though. Jason Richardson is a finisher, that's what the suns need. Chemistry is important of course, but on paper, i think the Suns did well.

agreed-
richardson can score
- all the suns gave up are a couple of bench players-

Bobcats will stuck suck!

What is this grade school? You lost your best friend, where is he going outer Mongolia? Nash is a professional ball player and should understand more than anyone that this is a business, the Suns added some much needed scoring to their team, and this notion that Bell was some shutdown defender is largely overrstated.

December 11, 2008  09:44 AM ET

He should be upset at Bell for not giving him a call to tell him what was going on.

Sorry, Nash, but this still is a great trade for the Suns. We gave up two guys averaging about 8 and 9 points respectively for an elite player averaging about 19pts per game. Diaw was overpaid and Bell wasn't happy. Singletary could be thrown in because the Suns didn't need two rookie point guards. The Suns even got Dudley and a 2nd Round pick, just for kicks.

December 11, 2008  09:56 AM ET

The Suns got the better end of the deal. I am not a big fan of Jason Richardson, but he is instant offense and now the Suns add another potent scorer to their starting lineup.

The only thing is that Raja Bell was their best defender. As far as the Bobcats go, this trade doesn't help their shortcomings. They lost their biggest offensive threat and added an undersized power forward in Diaw.

It looks like another struggling year for the Bobcats.

they arent lil machines that are emotionless...theyre human. its not like hes blubbering hes just gonna miss his friend. thats real, thats real life. yeah uh, no duh its business. he knows that better than yall do. its easy to hate on a millionairE when your broke but money doesnt change how you feel about life. but keep hiding behind your computer and feel like your all growded up...poke the stick at the lion lol........awww dont get mad at this either. you know im right.

-Get over it Nash it's business man.... omk!!

Man I thought Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in the Shawshank Redemption was moving. Maybe they canboth end up on the Heat and meet on South Beach, almost like the movie.

December 11, 2008  10:42 AM ET

I think the Suns got the better end of the deal, but scoring won't help if they don't stop the other team from scoring. I'm a big J Rich fan. I believe it was a mistake to trade him from Golden State, but until the Suns address the defense, the team will continue to underacheive.

December 11, 2008  10:45 AM ET

Sorry-underachieve.

December 11, 2008  10:55 AM ET

The sun is setting on Phoenix. Shaq is looking more bloated than ever, Steve Nash is looking old and unmotivated and no on one the team has any clue how to run the new offense now that D'Antoni is gone.

Are they also going to wait for 2010?

December 11, 2008  11:07 AM ET

I thought the Suns wanted to get away from relying on out-scoring opponents? Now who's gonna guard Kobe in a possible playoff match-up? Barnes? Please.

The Suns trade a good defender and decent big man of the bench for a flat out scorer, who's not known for defense. Yeah the Suns can score once again, but how will Amar'e react? I mean, J Rich needs the ball to score and Amar'e is already complaining about not getting enough touches or being the franchise player, so with the signing of another borderline all-star, how will he feel now? Less touches, less points, less happy Amar'e, and overall the Suns are still not at the level of the Lakers, or Boston or possibly Cleveland. They are still in the next tier with teams like Orlando, San Antonio and Utah (both when healthy) Hornets, and possibly Dallas, Detroit (if they gel better) and Portland at a stretch (although the Blazers lack enough experience).

December 11, 2008  11:20 AM ET

he'll get over it once the winning comes. this is a good deal for the suns...

the problem is it further depleted their backcourt defense. richardson does not have a credential as a good stoppper as bell. how are they going to guard bryant, ginobili, or the other top guards in the league. this is going to be a big problem for amare and shaq as well because they might always end up in foul trouble contending penetrations after slashers go through the porous defense of nash and jrich. the suns should look for a defensive stopper somewhere.

December 11, 2008  11:32 AM ET

So umm I guess Nash will be right behind Amare now.

December 11, 2008  11:48 AM ET

Did he cry with hihs BFF before he left? I wonder if he realizes how soft he sounded? Other players across the NBA will be laughing at him for this. Too me it sounds like he's sad because he lost another teammate whoose ability to play defense covered up his inability to do just that. He needs to suck it up, step up and adjust, or show to everyone that he was the poorest choice for an MVP player ever.

absolutely-
but Kerr knew this - which is why he's putting all his eggs
in one basket for the next 2 years

In the end though- I think Amare is the kind of person that
will go wherever the most $$ is - in theory it should be Phoenix
