Heisman 'politics' angers Leach

Texas quarterback Colt McCoy and Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford will represent the Big 12 as Heisman Trophy finalists at Saturday night's announcement in New York, along with Tim Tebow, the Florida quarterback and 2007 Heisman winner. Nobody needed tarot cards to see that coming. But Wednesday's announcement surprised some because it didn't include Texas Tech senior quarterback Graham Harrell. Harrell passed for more yards than any of the finalists and led the Red Raiders to an 11-1 season. Harrell is in Orlando for tonight's The Home Depot/ESPNU College Football Awards and learned the news after meeting with reporters and a hallway chit-chat with McCoy, standing a few feet from Tebow. "We had a special season," said Harrell, the surgically repaired fingers on his left (non-throwing) hand taped together. "That's what we focused on. ... We won as many games as anyone. ... If we don't get picked, that's the way it goes." Harrell's coach, Mike Leach, didn't react as calmly. "If Graham is not invited to the Heisman, they ought to quit giving out the award," he said in a statement. "It is a shameless example of politics ruling over performance."

can't disagree with Leach on that comment. I was shocked too. What's up voters?

December 11, 2008  08:16 AM ET

If you dont go to a "big time" school forget about any accolades. Its all BS politics just ask Boise State they did everything they had to do and still get shafted

December 11, 2008  08:22 AM ET

Harrell and Crabtree deserve to be there. It was BS watching ESPN try to reason it out last night..."Crabtree and Harrell probably will take votes away from each other." Really? Because Reggie Bush and Leinhart would have done the same thing. Did that stop voters from giving the Heisman to Bush? "They don't want someone to go to NY and get 2% of the vote." Well, at least they'd get to go to NY. And they'd have no reason to complain.

December 11, 2008  08:31 AM ET

It has nothing to do with politics. Tebow, McCoy, and Bradford sucked up most of the votes because of where they and their teams ended up. Harrell and Crabtree probably split what was left. They usually announce the separation between the candidates. There was no reason to embarrass those 2 on a national stage.

December 11, 2008  08:33 AM ET

Harrell & Crabtree deserve to be there.

December 11, 2008  08:38 AM ET

Don't they usually invite 5 players to NY for the Heisman ceremony?

December 11, 2008  08:57 AM ET

So let me get this straight....one loss against the number 4 (I think) team at the time eliminates 2 deserving candidates????? Numbers and carrying a team don't mean anything I guess.

December 11, 2008  09:18 AM ET

If Harrell deserves to be in the Heisman ceremony... then every other Tech QB in the past should have been there as well... The QB stats then were just as good.... Tech QB's always have monster stat seasons its nothing new... Like the QB's from Hawaii... its more of the system then it is the actual talent of the QB

I've heard the same thing about McCoy...it's the system.....

difference between Harrell and past qb's is that he led this team to a 11 - 1 record, including a win over current #3 University of Texas.... ( and don't go to the "we lost the game in the last second... UT led that game for a total of 1:31)

December 11, 2008  09:26 AM ET

ESPN does it again!! Harrell should be there.

One more time people, the Heisman is NOT awarded to the best player in college football. The process of determining the Heisman winner is something akin to the selection of someone to fill a vacant US Senate seat from Illinois, except it tries to maintain an air of legitimacy in the midst of its farcical inner workings.

December 11, 2008  09:33 AM ET

Like so many other awards, the Heisman trophy has become watered down as a result of its own status. Once intended to honor the best player in college football, it now is a reward for the 'best player on the best team.' Take a look at recent winners and you find that the vast majority are from teams playing in BCS conferences, going to BCS bowls. Does this mean that they are the best players in college football? Absolutely not - it means they get the most media coverage, are products of the most efficiently ran systems and are surrounded by the best talent. Politics and wrangling now do as much to determine who the Heisman trophy goes to as does actual play on the field.

In addressing whether Harrell should have been invited to New York, the answer is Yes. Of the thousands of players that compete in college football each season, is it too much to ask that the five 'best' be allowed to come to New York and recieve recognition? I mean the Oscars choose five nominees, and assuming the nominees are willing, allow all five to attend the awards, why can't the Heisman do the same? Everyone understands that only one person can win, sometimes though, the trip is as much a reward as the final outcome.

December 11, 2008  09:37 AM ET

That award isn't what it used to be...

December 11, 2008  09:45 AM ET

Like it or not Harrell is hurt by the Andre Ware/David Klingler syndrome of huge passing numbers based on a pass happy offense. Not saying it is fair, Harrell is a good QB, but that's the stigma that any Tech QB is going to have to overcome to be considered.

December 11, 2008  09:53 AM ET

Yeah lets talk about talent from the QB when that same QB was responsible for Texas' only loss this year. Harrell had a much better season than Mccoy did. If Mccoy was so good he would not have let his team lose to Tech like they did and dont blame it on the freshman that "should have" caught the interception. It was actually Mccoys fault that Texas lost, what was he thinking giving Harrell and Tech's offensive over a minute left to make the comeback td ? Any good, experienced QB would have run the play clock down to the final 3 seconds or so instead of snapping the ball leaving 15, 20 seconds left on the play clock. Just goes to show that Mccoy couldnt think straight under pressure while Harrell obviously could (thats why Tech got the W).

Although it really doesnt matter that Harrell and Crabtree got cut because Bradford is going to win the Heisman BUT if your going to toss Mccoy into the top 3 you should at least consider when the #3 and #4 candidate played head-to-head. Who performed better and who performed under pressure ? Obviously the QB with the win.

Texas fans really need to stop whining so much its starting to look real embarrassing.

December 11, 2008  09:56 AM ET

I thought the Heisman Trophy is SUPPOSED to be awarded to the best college football player, they should just now call it the Heisman Quarterback Trophy since that is the only position that ever gets invited to the ceremony, excluding the Reggie Bush anomaly.

December 11, 2008  09:56 AM ET

If this award should go to the "Best Player", why has it never gone to an offensive or defensive lineman.

The award is a disgrace

First... Texas' system is not even a passing system... Texas is a run first team, but due to all of the good RB going pro already... Texas has done what has worked best. If it was the system then every QB that Texas has had would have crazy stats like the Tech QBs... Sims is the proof that Texas is not a QB system Offensive... and true Tech did beat Texas this year... but they have done it in the past as well... so what is so different about this year.... The only thing I see different is that Tech was able to not lose a game to a lesser team as they do every year... they won the games that they were supposed to and usually they slip up and lose one or 2

December 11, 2008  10:05 AM ET

It's another politics thing but if they would have had that cinderella undefeated season and won the big12 championship and made it to BCS championship He would have got second to Tebow probably just because of the schools. But at least he would have made the ballot...

The QB position is they hardest position to run on the field... so that by its self is a plus for a QB... Then for someone like Tebow or Colt who can pass and run as well as they do, and score as many TDs as they do... it just crazy... Reggie Bush was taking punts back, 70-60 yard running TDs... it was almost like every time he got the ball he would score or gain 40 yards
