Texas politician seeks to abolish BCS
Politics makes for strange bedfellows. So, apparently does the Bowl Championship Series. Texas Rep. Joe Barton (R-Ennis), the ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, is taking dead aim at the BCS. The tactic is different but the goal is the same as President-Elect Barack Obama: a playoff. From The Associated Press story: "In some years the sport's national championship winner was left unsettled, and at least one school was left out of the many millions of dollars in revenue that accompany the title," Barton said in a statement released ahead of the bill's introduction. "Despite repeated efforts to improve the system, the controversy rages on." He said the bill - being co-sponsored by Reps. Bobby Rush, an Illinois Democrat, and Michael McCaul, a Texas Republican - "will prohibit the marketing, promotion, and advertising of a postseason game as a 'national championship' football game, unless it is the result of a playoff system. Violations of the prohibition will be treated as violations of the Federal Trade Commission Act as an unfair or deceptive act or practice." History says the effort won't go far. Barton took on the BCS three years ago. Last season, three representatives from (just coincidence) Georgia, Hawaii and Idaho decided the BCS was a bad thing.

It's only unfair when their team gets left out. That's when they decide to take action.

Is this a joke? The government needs to stick to things that concern the government. I don't give two **** what some senator or representative thinks about college football.
On a side note, why is there a picture of Bob Stoops next to this story?

I like the way he is going about it. Can't force them to change the way they are doing things by asking them... so make it illegal to advertise it as a championship game.
I say we need an Executive Order #1 on January 21st from Obama stating that the NCAA must take over the Bowls and enact a playoff system

Don't worry about our economy, the war, the borders, health care, the environment, national security. Waste your time on someting that DOESN'T MATTER! Things must be wonderful in Texas if that's all this numbskull has to worry about.
A public service announcement from a huge college football fan that would prefer a playoff system.

Everyone wants a playoff system but how are we ever gonna get one? I seriously doubt that one day the BCS officals will wake up one day and think... we need a playoff system... then magic its done

Simple solution: The BCS drops the word "national" and just goes with "BCS Championship Game".
I am very disappointed that a Republican (at one time the party of limited government) would put forth this idea.

With the ecomony headed for the Great OBAMA depression, I would think that politicians would have something more important that a kids game.

i agree a playoff is the way to go... but politicians need to get ther noses out of sports... don't we have bigger problems?... we are a ong way off for a play off (due to the money that the bowls generate)... but i say cut the season by one game (play 11) the only reason we play 12 is to allow teams to play a FCS team to get bowl eligible.... get rid of conference championships (heck get rid of divisions in conference)... rank them off 1-8 (maybe 12, giving 1-4 a bye) using the same BCS formula (and include the AP and legends poll) that would give us 4 human votes and a set of computers.... play the games in december... we can still have the bowls (when a team is eliminated they can still play a bowl game) and the Nat'l Champ game played at Neutral site like a College SuperBowl (Float it around)

Politicians need to keep their noses out of football. They have bigger fish to fry right now. I don't want Obama, or a Republican from Texas, or anyone else in Congress messing with college football.
The government screws things up. It doesn't fix them. The 10 worst words you'll ever hear. "I'm from the government and I'm here to help you."

The bowl system is revenue stream for colleges and cities alike. Just change up the way it is done. But keep the bowl games.
