Red Sox have Varitek over a barrel
Except for the "offer" of arbitration, which he declined, free agent catcher Jason Varitek has not received a contractual offer from the Red Sox, a source familiar with the talks said. Varitek's agent, Scott Boras, had been asked at a press briefing Wednesday last night whether Varitek had received an offer from the ballclub, to which he replied in the affirmative. Guess it ultimately depends on what your interpretation of the word "offer" means. It does appear that Varitek's options have thinned out during these meetings. The Tigers acquired Gerald Laird, the Reds added Ramon Hernandez, and the Dodgers were one team that indicated their interest in Varitek was curtailed after the Red Sox offered the 37-year-old catcher arbitration, meaning that it would cost the team that signed him a No. 1 draft pick since he is a Type A free agent.

At least they don't have him in a barrel...
Who would the starting catcher for the Red Sox be if they didn't sign Teck? Seems this might work both ways.

Just to be clear...he's the "CAPTAIN", right?
Man, just imagine the noise if the Yanks treated their captain this way. The Evil Empire is alive and well and living on Yawkey Way.

true that !
- he probably has several options....if he's willing to
take less $$$.....he seems to have (probably agent-induced)
over-inflated thoughts as to hs value.
A good leader- yes
but he simply cannot hit & has really never been great defensively
If he goes ANYWHERE but boston- he's a 2-3 mil payer max.

Option 1: Trade for someone
Option 2: Let the two AAA guys platoon like they did last year in AAA.

I think Varitek will be back with the Sox. Sure he's looking around for someone to blow him away with a ridiculous contract. Why not? The man is getting divorced and stands to lose 1/2 or more of every thing he's earned. A little infusion of cash nver hurts, eh.
Ultimately, I don't think anyone is desperate enough for a catcher to give a light hitting, 37 year old with diminishing defensive skills more than a year or two @ 8-10 million. I believe the Sox will pay him a little more than that.
My hope is that the Sox get a good young catcher and keep Tek for a couple more years as a mentor/platoon partner. Just don't let him bat lefty. He hit .284 last year from the right side. If he had hit .284 for the entire season, this headline would have read "Varitek has Red Sox over a barrel"

Thanks Hyper,
That is what I thought, so it really does work both ways, the Red Sox need to make the trade, then they have him over a barrel, and that is if the Catcher they trade for is major league ready.

Yeah, the Sox should follow the Yankees lead and give him 4 yrs @ mega millions. Cuz that worked out so well for them and Posada. I think Theo learned a valuable lesson as a young man watching the Celtics give their aging big three huge long term deals and then seeing the franchise set back 10 years because of it (and a few other unfortunate incidents).
BTW, loyalty would go both ways, if it existed.

No, he's wrong. Tom Yawkey owned the Red Sox for 44 years. That's what kind of name it is.

Right or wrong it is an interesting comment. Red Sox need to do something, this is a bigger need than Tex.
