The NFL Network, citing one source, is reporting that Saints offensive coordinator Doug Marrone has accepted the Syracuse head-coaching job. According to the NFL Network report, Marrone was offered the job Thursday. Earlier Thursday East Carolina Coach Skip Holtz took his name out of the running to replace Greg Robinson. Marrone, the Saints' offensive coordinator/offensive line coach, is a Syracuse alum.

Not sure of this hire. The guy might be an alum, but I really think Syracuse should have tried to pull an established head coach.

I am actually surprised that Turner Gill wasn't selected for the job. He is doing great at Buffalo and already knows upstate New York.

I thought this was Gill's best shot at becoming a HC at a BCS school

Is it bad that no one other than Saints fans (mostly) have heard of this guy?

There's still Auburn

Who is that guy? HAR HAR HAR!

December 12, 2008  11:21 AM ET

way to hire another no name coach. This is just what your program needs, another 3 years of failure.

Let's see offensive coordinator comes from pro football team to coach at a team that is struggling badly. And the guy went to school at the school he'll be coaching.

Where have we heard that before? And how well did it work out?

December 12, 2008  12:10 PM ET

This guys biggest claim to fam is that he looks like Roger Clemens.

Don't worry. Gill has better days ahead of him...

Nice Notre Dame jab.

Yeah, I know he does but Syracuse had a no brainer in front of them and they once again screw it up.

December 12, 2008  01:08 PM ET

How do you explain taking him over Gill? If true, I am sure we shall hear the spin soon. Makes no sense.

December 12, 2008  01:50 PM ET

Don't sweat it. The AJC says this guy is already fired and Gill is the frontrunner.

Steve Spurrier? Okay, he had a stop over at Duke.

December 12, 2008  03:27 PM ET

Yet another reason why Syracuse sucks. I mean, out of all the fired coaches and available candidates they hire some guy out of the NFL. The pain never stops for Syracuse does it?

I try. It's not because it's Notre Dame, though. Weis was more high profile than this guy. I'll be highly surprised if it works out, but I will admit I was wrong, if he does.

So the Saints lose to the Bears and lose their Off. Coor in the same night? Geez. What's next?

DON'T YOU SAY THEY LOSE TO THE LIONS! DON'T!

3? Either you're being kind or you haven't been paying attention for very long. They haven't had a decent year since McNabb graduated.

December 13, 2008  10:00 AM ET

I'm surprised it wasn't Gill. I think Syracuse, with their history of selecting wrong people, would go with a proven commodity - a guy who's already proven he can bring a program up by getting the best out of kids.

The first thing you gotta look for is whether or not a coach's kids play hard. And Turner's do.

oh, they do still play football in syracuse. i thought they quit after mcnabb left.
