Angels offer Teixeira historic contract

The Angels have offered an eight-year contract to Mark Teixeira, general manager Tony Reagins said Friday night. The contract would be the longest and richest in club history. The value could almost double the previous club record, the $90 million guaranteed last year to Torii Hunter. Reagins declined to provide the value of Teixeira's offer. The Angels are believed to have offered at least $160 million, matching or exceeding the highest offer so far reported for Teixeira. Owner Arte Moreno flew from his Arizona home to Las Vegas on Tuesday and met personally with Scott Boras, the agent for Teixeira. Angels spokesman Tim Mead said he believed Moreno presented the offer to Boras at that time. Mead also said he did not know when the offer might expire. None of the other teams in the Teixeira sweepstakes -- the Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals -- has been reported to have offered more than eight years. The Nationals reportedly have bid $160 million over eight years, the Orioles between $140 million and $150 million over seven years. The details of the Boston bid have not been reported

Is he staying, same offer that the Nats supposedly offered atleast the Angels win.

Angels will get him, Mark is just weighing his options but we know good well Anaheim is the best place for him.

Tex is obviously a quality player.....
but is he really one of the 5-10 best position players it he game?

I can see why the Angels need to lock him up with Vlad
having 1 maybe 2 years left.....
but if you take 2005 out of the equation- his career year-
his #s are about .285-290, 32-34 hrs & 110-115 rbi
obviously great stats....but he ain't a top tier player

No he's not in the top twenty best players in the league. Paying that much for a first baseman is a joke!

I would like for Boston to concentrate on finding a catcher and some relief pitchers. Tex would be nice but they will do fine without him.

Yes, they will. Mornin' Becca, how's tricks? :)

i know he wants to play more to his maryland home but the O's probably aren't going to get him. i don't think the red sox need him. i just hope he doesn't go to the nats. he will most likely end up with the Angels or O's.

I think he winds up on the Yankees. The Yankees let a huge part of their offense walk this year. They must replace that offense or the pitching won't really matter.

8 years at $ 160 in today's market. The top bid. Competing teams may do better than that. $ 180 to 200 mil at 10 years? Those damn yankees. Where do these agents get the idea they can demand such money?

Sorry, stepped any to feed my daughter. Good! I don't want to go into it right now, but if you pray please add me to your list as I have a deal of a lifetime in the works and if it goes through I'm set.

Angels need to get tex or it will be a struggle on offense.

Even after paying for the pitchers? What about Swisher?

Swisher is insurance. Can also play the outfield. Cashman never operates without a planned backup.

December 13, 2008  11:11 AM ET

Well, if the Yanks Traveling Salesman Brian Cashman - who visited CC and Andy Petitte - visits Tex, then I might believe the Yanks are interested. The Angels really need him - I don't see the Red Sox interest in him - they have such a strong lineup unless Ortiz and Lowell are more injured than we know...

I say Texeira goes back to the Angels..

The Yankees can afford 5 contracts of that size just as easily as most teams can afford one. Their revenue streams are world wide. They must keep winning if they want those world wide revenues to continue pouring in.

They haven't improved their team one bit unless they replace the Giambi and Abreu offense in their lineup. Swisher doesn't even come close to doing that. Signing Sabathia and Burnett while letting Giambi and Abreu walk is a wash as far as I'm concerned. They need more offense to ensure a playoff berth.

um, they look at their COMMISSION checks from last year

December 13, 2008  11:22 AM ET

Yeah, I know Swisher is more a complementary part. But they have paid a lot of money to A Rod, Jeter, CC, Burnett and a few others. I just don't see them getting Teixiera. I may be wrong.
