Paterno: Devlin's timing hurting Lions

Pat Devlin was not a part of Penn State's pre-Rose Bowl media day yesterday. Not that he would have been. On Wednesday, the Nittany Lions announced that the quarterback was transferring and that he would not play in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. As the backup to Daryll Clark, Devlin's departure puts Penn State in a precarious position heading to Pasadena to play defensive-minded Southern California. "The timing is maybe not the best as far as we're concerned, but it may be the best for him," Penn State coach Joe Paterno said of the sophomore quarterback. "I have no ill feelings. As I told him, 'Pat, I hope you're making the right decision. I wish you luck.' . . . He's a good kid. He's a prime football player." The Downingtown East product is shopping his services to a Division I-AA program. And the Lions, who needed Devlin to step in when Clark was knocked out in the Ohio State game, are in a possible bind.

if he was such a good player he'd be on the field and not riding the pine.

Paterno is right. It's bad timing but Devlin made the right choice for him. He wants to play and the likelihood is that he would be sitting behind Clark next season as well.

It just looks like Penn State isnt going to do much with Clark as far as running the ball, but I wouldn't be surprised if Devlin's departure opens the door for more snaps for Derrick Williams out of the shotgun.

In the Rose Bowl game, I should have clarified. I know Williams is a Senior.

Its all about getting that pro contract. Too bad. there is nothing to say that one good year at PSU would not have given him that. His choice. But awful timing on his part. Unless playing in the bowl game pushes back his ability to go to the next school, then I do not understand why he would not wait a few weeks moreto do it..

Would you risk it if you thought you had the talent to maybe make it to the NFL? Would you ride pine waiting for the possibility that someone gets hurt, or a year from now JoePa croaks and sends the program into a tailspin. Why does anyone have a problem with a kid doing what he has the right to do?

On the timing, I am sure it has more to do with having to enroll into another school in order to participate this spring. You can't do that with the bowl games in January.

December 13, 2008  02:58 PM ET

No hard feelings huh Joe? Then why did you clean out his locker before informing him or his parents that he you removed him from the team?

December 13, 2008  03:37 PM ET

JoePa's cleaning house of all the players that were involved in breaking his hip!

Pat Devlin will be a good QB in a pro-style offense. PSU and a lot of other schools are going spread which is not Devlin's strength.

Devlin did what was best for him - and why not. Don't blame a good kid for looking out for himself.

Joe Flacco, the starting QB for the Baltimore Ravens did the same thing while he was in college switching from Pitt to Delaware before his senior season and it obviously paid dividends.

I agree 50yr the timing seems strange!

The only impact that this may have is if Clark gets his bell rung or worse in the Rose Bowl. From Devlin's standpoint, he could not enroll at another school in January if he's playing in the Rose Bowl. I don't blame the guy for doing what is best for Pat Devlin.

From how I interpreted the earlier story, it was simply the locker was cleaned out...I don't remember anything suggesting Joe had staff do it. I personally interpreted it as Joe told him since he was on the fence and couldn't commit, that was the same thing as a go, and he cleaned out his own locker. I could be wrong.

In any case, the parents and Devlin could have brought this up earlier. I recognize the timing for playing for another school, and they did what they felt they had to do. They've got the freedom to do that, just as JoePa has the freedom to do what HE wants to do.

Bottom line, He is afraid of USC D.
