Has Phillips lost control of Cowboys?

These Cowboys, on the eve of yet another monumental game they must win to salvage their season, give every indication they're spiraling out of control. Think about all the stuff that's happened this week: The owner running his mouth about the star runner's toughness and back-door meetings between petulant receivers and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. Every one of those issues is a systemic problem that accompanies a weak head coach like Wade Phillips. He has zero control of this team. None. Nada. Zilch. Phillips won't agree, but that's too bad. It's the truth. All you have to do is look at this dysfunctional team and how it has played all season to see that. The players are mad at Jerry for ripping Marion Barber. Now, you have a team divided. Players have taken sides. You're either a Witten guy or a T.O. guy. Ridiculous. But that's what happens when your head coach doesn't command respect. Phillips has no power. Jerry doesn't even bother hiding it anymore. Since Jerry calls all of the shots, why would anyone care what Phillips thinks? Besides, we all know Jason Garrett is going to be the next head coach. Phillips is a terrific defensive coordinator and a likable person, but he has allowed the players to seize control of this team.

Exactly...

Question should be: Did Phillips ever have control of Cowboys?

December 13, 2008  09:31 AM ET

All this has been quite obvious for a long time. This is Jerry's show. He loves all this infighting and controversy because it makes people talk about Jerry. I'm very surprised that even though this story is about Phillips, they don't have the Jerry picture posted. Have a seat in the back Wade.

December 13, 2008  09:41 AM ET

he never had it. jerry has the control.

December 13, 2008  09:48 AM ET

phillips has lost control..............of his bowels

lol

Cowboy thread after Cowboy thread after Cowboy thread. Is this a ploy to confuse the haters? They won't know which thread to go to that has the most Cowboy fans on it. Their heads are going to explode.

Hey, Plaxico went out in public last night. Of course, it was with his wife and family to a charity event. Naw, that wasn't staged was it?

OK, you can do better than that. Your post on the first thread was good.

He looks good in that shirt though.

Good..maybe he can get rid of weak Wade at seasons end.

According to the press, Wade "took control of the defense" from his Coordinator and since then they have been monsters.....he is known for his Def Coord skillz so if this is as a consequence of his involvement then I applaud him.

Now why he can;t kick some h_ass in other areas is beyond me. Guy's should be roaming the halls in terror right now. Sometimes the boss has to put on the angry face and get on people, yeah it sucks if they haven't done anything wrong but this is do or die time...... he can always be the grampa again in February. If it were me, fire the special teams coach and get another and make Special Teams the opening segment in every practice.

December 13, 2008  10:26 AM ET

sure we can get rid of wade after the year (i was never a fan of his anyway), but then hire garrett? whoa BIG upgrade! the way jerry did jimmy johnson and bill parcells no big name coach with any cred will want to come to work "for" jerry. im willing to bet that the number 1 owner that big name coaches dont want to work for or with Al Davis w/ Jerry Jones not far behind!

I would expect the Cowboys to win tomorrow night. Jacobs out, Hixon bad ankle, Robbins questionable, the Giants defense with only six sacks in the last five games ( four of those vs. the Redskins), and playing at home. the Cowboys should make the play offs. But Phillips ( no matter what happens this year-and the play offs are wide open), is not the right guy for this group.

Your reasoning is sound. However, I think these factors will be decisive:

1) Marion Barber not playing
2) Cowboys clubhouse bickering
3) Perfect opportunity for "Romo as Prime Time Choker" to add another chapter
4) Giants control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball

Result: Cowboys go "down for the count" Sunday night!
IMHO

I think the Cowboys could be in trouble this week.

Sorry about that.

December 13, 2008  10:50 AM ET

As for Phillips, he never was the right guy for this group. Just a caretaker.
The real question is whether Garrett can do any better or will JJ bring in another sheriff like Cowher / Schottenheimer to tame the lawless 'Boys.

"Has Phillips lost control of Cowboys?"

Did he ever have it?

It's "The Wild, Wild West" in Dallas. Ruled by gun slingers and crooks!
