Agent: Cubs will get another shot at Peavy

A proposed trade with the Cubs for Padres pitcher Jake Peavy fell through this week during baseball's winter meetings in Las Vegas. Peavy's agent, however, is confident trade talks could heat up again this season. "The word on the street here is the Padres are in pretty dire financial straits, partly because of the economy and partly because of a 99-loss season and partly because the owner and his wife are going through a pretty difficult divorce," Barry Axelrod said Thursday. "And the word is they cannot infuse more money into the team right now. Without that, they are looking at a team in the $40 million [salary] range. If that's the case, then it is hard to win. And I am not sure that they can go with a $40 million payroll and pay one guy (Peavy) $11 million. It is likely between now and the middle of next year, Jake won't be with the Padres." Axelrod described Peavy as being "frustrated and disappointed" after the trade talks with the Cubs came to a halt, at least temporarily.

He should go to a winner like Philly, he'd be a great #2 pitcher behind that stud Cole Hamels.

Peavy, just make sure you don't go to those chokers the Mets!

The agent actually said that the Padres have no choice but to deal Peavy to someone.

Mo who's going to earn 11 million more effectively Peavy or Fuentes? I vote for Peavy and a group of second tier relief pitchers. With the exception of MR, Hoffman, and very few others, closer performance tends to be erratic from year to year anyway.

Would love to have him, but not on Towers terms, he has no leverage left.

December 13, 2008  10:21 AM ET

i think that towers is gonna come crawling back to the Braves because he is so desperate. he is so determined to trade peavy that he will accept anything decent....

December 13, 2008  10:58 AM ET

I think he goes to the Braves too.

December 13, 2008  11:01 AM ET

let it end already hes not a free agent and is already getting more publisity than anyone else.

Jeez-
I know every other thread is about the Yankees....
and we need a little mixing up-
but these Peavy threads- which amount to NOTHING-
are becoming tiresome

I just don't see the Cubs getting him. They need a lefty hitter such as Abreu, not a Peavy. Although any team would love Peavy.

Agreed.

He is, then he isn't. Oh, it's now on again. But maybe it might not..... Just finish it already would ya?

December 13, 2008  12:58 PM ET

The Cubs DO NOT need Abreu. He cannot play defense. They already have Soriano out there, why put another liability in the field? Maybe they can get Giles from the Pads along with Peavy?

And phonies !!!!

Sounds like Peavy and Axelrod want the Cubs more than the Cubs want Peavy.

December 13, 2008  01:39 PM ET

Oh, I'm quite sure Hendry wants Peavy. But not for the price that Towers is demanding. Towers knows that he's in a lose-lose situation, and that sooner or later, he's going to have to part ways with Peavy. What I don't understand is why he's handling the situation in the manner that he is. He doesn't have the upper hand, and has already managed to anger two teams. Now he's probably going to have to settle for even less than the offers on the table this time when he crawls back to Hendry.

ATNN Cubs, Angels, Yankees, Red Sox fans: Either late this winter or by late July, one of you groups will absolutely get Peavy and give away very, very little in what will be the most ridiculously uneven trades of the last 20 years. San Diego is absolutely desperate and must get this contract off their backs. Sad but true for all 10 of us Padres fans out there.

Dam Keith, we finally agree on something, what's next; cats & dogs living together? You're right, if the Padres come down just a bit the Cubs will pull the trigger. The Cubs do have other needs but when a pitcher like Peavey is on the market you should take a sniff. Having Peavey would solidify a very decent Cubs rotation.

I'd agree with that, as long as they pick up another lefty for the bullpen somewhere.

I would still ship Anderson and Rasmus to SD for Peavy. If we could sign Fuentes, we could afford to send them Perez and Rasmus......but then we'd probably have to shed some payroll somewhere else, most probably Ankiel.

I'm a little disappointed at the Cardinals' lack of action this offseason. How about you guys? If Khalil Greene is your big deal, then you haven't had a great winter.
