Iowa State coach Gene Chizik is in the running for the Auburn job, Cyclones athletic director Jamie Pollard said Friday. Pollard acknowledged that Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs recently contacted him to speak with Chizik about the Tigers vacancy. Pollard said in a statement released Friday that his understanding is that Chizik -- the Tigers defensive coordinator from 2002-04 -- has met with Auburn officials and is a serious candidate for the job.

Who isn't linked with Auburn right now? All I know is that Auburn has lost a lot of recruits so they need to hire someone A.S.A.P. so he can hit the trail and get the numbers back up.

Good lord, why? Iowa State went 0-8 in conference this year. They did defeat South Dakota State, though.

Exactly what I was thinking.

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Could this be because anyone of quality skills has turned them down? All these good coaches rumored to have been interviewed may be just practicing up on their job interview and resume` skills?
This whole fiasco reminds me of the botched up mess that Steve Pederson, the former AD from Nebraska, made of hiring of a head coach for Nebraska football after firing Solich who had just finished a 9-3 season. Wonder if Auburn's new coach will be a repeat of that infamous hire of Bill Callahan that broke all sorts of records in reverse and put us in the tank. Thank the football gods for Tom Osborne returning to Nebraska as AD and the hiring of Bo Pelini, the Huskers are finally back on the right track.

My guess would be he used to be a DC for Auburn, he helped win a national championship at a school that actually can GET highly rated recruits, and at this point in the coaching party Auburn is the sloppy girl on the couch drunk dialing all the exes she can find in her cell phone

Why - they are reaching, that's why. Who hasn't been "linked" to the opening. It is going to take someone like Chiz, who might be desperate enought for a change, or desperate enough for an opportunity to walk into that fecal tornado.

Nice metaphor, btw.

Their sloppy drunk AD has just about ran out of drunk dialing minutes. Time for a new plan.

Chizik was DC at Auburn and Texas with the #1 defense in the nation at each - therefore no real surprise that Auburn is interested.

He is two seasons away from getting the ISU cupboard re-stocked so they can compete in the Big 12 North again. I'm hoping he doesn't go, but if Auburn offers then he will probably go.

The job is his now. I hope this guy has a good offensive coordinator lined up.

December 13, 2008  08:18 PM ET

Tell me they did not hire this guy.

That would be **** at Auburn.

He'll be gone in 2 years.

December 13, 2008  09:28 PM ET

What are the Auburn brass thinking? O.K., this guy was a good DC....but his performance at Iowa State as a HC was not good. I read the blog where he was 2 years away from "restocking" the cyclones, meanwhile he hung up a 3-9 and 2-10.....0-8 in the Big 12 and they didn't play OKlahoma or Texas! They even lost to UNLV. Tuberville must be laughing....this is the Houston Nutt deal all over again.

December 13, 2008  10:03 PM ET

Why comment 14 was removedd is a mystery, so I'll rephrase:

Auburn trades Tommy Tuberville for Gene Chisik.

The powers at Auburn in charge of that decision are a bunch of ignorant somethings. I would say saltines or b urbon soaked c r a c k e r s. Wed'll see if the Auburn alumns at CNN allow this to stay.

I would not be surprised if Iowa State expedited the deal by paying Auburn a bonus to get the bum Chizik out of town.

And Auburn's spot in the SEC's basement is now solidified
