Why Muschamp won't take Auburn job

Will Muschamp emphatically shot down television reports in Mobile that he would be the named the next coach at Auburn today. "I have not talked to Auburn about this job and I have no interest in the job," said Muschamp. "I really don't know what else to say. I'm going to stay at Texas until they fire me." My sources tell me that some Board of Trustee members did pick up the phone and call Muschamp to find out if he was interested. But those sources also tell me that when Muschamp was at Auburn as DC, he and athletics director Jay Jacobs did not part on the best of terms.

He's better off staying at Texas.

wHY??!! Have you ever been to Austin?? Great City in Texas!

December 13, 2008  02:06 PM ET

Muschamp is in Austin because of the meddling BoT and onionless AD at Auburn. Not that Texas isn't a great gig, but the soap opera surrounding the Auburn football program made it look that much better. Only the HC position has changed there. The same meddling numbskulls are still in their chairs of power and influence.

Amen! That group could screw up a steel ball!

Firing Tuberville will prove to be the most numbskull move Auburn has ever made. How many winning coaches have their jobs interviewed for when they haven't even been fired? Tommy made them look real silly when he went 13-0 the next season. What legit coach would deal with that circus? Auburn will not return to contending til the AD is gone b/c no coach in his right mind would take the job... especially now with Saban just down the road.

He's been promised the best coaching job in the country! Why would he leave? And then we're gonna get the "Major"... Good days ahead for Texas football!! Hook 'Em!!!

My only concern with Muschamp is patience. He signed a 10 year contract but he can't seriously expect to wait 10 years to take over. And Mack doesn't seem in any hurry to retire and why would he? He is one year younger than Saban. So when a sweetheart of a head coaching postion is offered to him later on, should he consider it? But this Auburn job would be suicidal. Chizik seems to be the sacrificial lamb. The admin and Board of Trustees, as long as they remain of the same ilk, no head coach is going to be up to their standards. S

Fox (faux) News, once again jumped the gun and ran with a sure fire, can't miss rhumor while the rest of the reporters were wondering, "What do these guy's smoke?" To the credit of Muschamp, he should and did keep a ( 10,000 foot pole ) out in front of him and dissed the weirdness that is now Auburn. Also, Tommy was and is class, his dismissal speaks volumns about backroom games and the lowlife side of the Alumni vs college coaching that is now swirling around the school. They, the mess that is Auburn, can't even agree if Tommy quit, was fired, or who the hell is in charge of finding his replacement.

December 13, 2008  06:25 PM ET

I like Coach Chizak, but I think he's in for a rough ride in a almost hopeless situation. TommyT is a quality coach he certainly deserved better than he received at Auburnt. What a circus!

December 13, 2008  08:34 PM ET

I've been saying since Tubbs got the axe that no top coach or coordinator was going to fill the job and I feel bad for the Auburn fans. I live in the Florida panhandle where FSU, UF, Bama, Auburn and LSU fans mix and the Auburn fans have been some of the least obnoxious fans I have run across. Auburn at least could have hired an up and comer like Holtz or Gill. Why go get a guy who can't score in the highest scoring conference in the nation?

I really fall bad for anyone who convinced themselves that Spurrier was coming to Auburn.

December 13, 2008  08:50 PM ET

Chiz left Auburn for Texas for much the same reasons that Muschamp left. The fact that he is returning is a sure sign of desperation, on both parts. Auburn gets a headcoach who is sucking wind, and Chiz gets a program that makes Manson look sane.

December 13, 2008  11:27 PM ET

Why would he leave TX for AU.......TX is a great gig.........and to be HC in waiting is a sweet deal....... the only school he'd prolly consider I would think would be UGA........his alma mater.

December 13, 2008  11:30 PM ET

Umm, not sure why auburn would replace a coach with a winning record for one with a 5-19 record. I know he coaches in the Big twelve, its division one football, but still. The SEC has to be almost as hard (even the west division). Plus, now he will have to out-recriut Saban, Richt, and Doogie Howser. Seriously Auburn, you are probably going to be okay, should be at least 6-6 most years.

December 14, 2008  12:10 AM ET

Why Muschamp won't take Auburn job: because it's now a crap gig that only an 0-fer would take.

War Eagle - You got Chiz in your pants!

December 14, 2008  12:28 AM ET

Austin seems a little too liberal for me. Seems like alot of people voted for Obama there. Not the kind of football town I would want to be in.

December 14, 2008  12:54 AM ET

Austin is mostly a pretty cool place, but its definitely known for its..lets just say Brokeback Mountain tendencies.

December 14, 2008  07:09 AM ET

Yea SouthernMiss3613, You sound like a real fen winner to me.

December 14, 2008  08:38 AM ET

i dont see him sticking around texas for the next 10 years. whack brown isnt giving up the helm just yet, he should go and make his name as a head coach, every year his name is going to come up for the head gig and im sure one of these times he's going to take it

Wow, do you really want to be stereotyping Austin while your posting from Slidell?

Chizik is about the best Auburn could hope for right now. He's going to get his **** handed to him for a couple years, but so is the rest of the SEC as Saban and Meyer rack in all the top recruits. Alabama went through about half a decade of rebuilding and now it's Auburn's turn.
