More Wolverines to transfer

Sam McGuffie is leaving the Michigan football program. The freshman tailback's one season at U-M ended with a transfer, the Free Press has confirmed, a decision McGuffie made public Friday through an interview with TheWolverine.com. McGuffie is expected to attend a school in Texas, having strongly considered Texas A&M and Baylor. McGuffie joins a growing list of players apparently not returning from this season's team. Rodriguez has confirmed that Zion Babb, Jason Kates and Artis Chambers are transferring, and said last Saturday that Carson Butler and Avery Horn appear to be going as well. Rodriguez said offensive lineman Cory Zirbel's playing career is over after a devastating knee injury.

The ship be sinking.....

December 13, 2008  09:54 AM ET

You gotta break it down before you can build it up. Even as an ND fan I think RR has a better chance to "build it back up" than CW. Next year will probably be another tough one for the Michigan faithful but I think in 2010 results will be there. If not, RR probably won't be...

December 13, 2008  09:55 AM ET

None of those players are major losses. Not even McGuffie, who I wish well since he is transferring due to family reasons.

The ship isn't sinking. It's just the effects of a poor season. As long as Forcier and Beaver honor their verbals, Michigan will be fine in a season or two.

I don't know. I know Rodriguez basically completely overhauled WVU. But there is no good news out of Michigan and there hasn't been in a long time. Don't get your hopes up.

I understand your point but we have seen this with other major programs who make changes in coaches, and offensive personnel. It takes awhile. Michigan overhauled everything over night. After this dreadful season we know that Threet and Sheridan are not the QB's for this system. Forcier or Beaver will be true freshmen and shouldn't be counted on for miracles so the 2009 season should be another struggle.

It's 2010 where change will come. That's the season where Michigan should be a 8 or 9 win program. If not then I would have to agree with Gariboy. It would be time to see what the administration do with Rodriguez.

No good news outta michigan? Michigan's basketball team beat #4 UCLA and then #3 Duke... We are making the most out of it. Red wings won the stanley cup and are gonna win back to back to back. Actaully our sports situation it still better than most cities

Agreed.

For those who follow the innards of UM football, this was know weeks ago. It's just now "official."

The kid had 3 concussions this year and has family issue to tend to back in Texas. I hope he finds happiness where ever he transfers to. Btw, UM gave him full release without any conditions. Not a lot of schools do that as UM didn't do that to Justin Boren who went and transferred to tOSU when the school could have easily barred him from doing so.

Michigan Football will be back. The ship is far from sinking..it's just being loaded up with ammo to shoot down the naysayers.

Every single big time program goes through this. I'm no Michigan fan but I would certainly put money on RR bringing them back to where their fans want them.

December 13, 2008  11:46 AM ET

Best of luck Sam, you can't fault the guy for wanting to be close to his family during these circumstances. Best of luck!

I have to agree. I don't particularly care for Michigan either but I just can't see how this is any indication that the ship is sinking or whatever metaphor you want to use. He can't control how many concussions a kid gets or what his home situation is.

If Rodriguez has the same kind of outcome next year as he did in his second season at WVU, news clips like these will be a distant memory.

Do a TD on it Hova!!!!!!!!!!!!

December 13, 2008  12:50 PM ET

And the winner is? WVA. They're lucky RR left them. He's obviously not any better qualified for Michigan than Weis is for Notre Dame. But then again -- if the powers at be "do not get it" what else can we do? Maybe the Trustees should consider changes at that level. There is a saying where I come from -- "THE FISH ROTS FROM THE HEAD!" -- and it applies to everything.

December 13, 2008  12:58 PM ET

Well let's see:

McGuffie almost didn't come to Michigan anyway, had a death in the family, and has a younger brother that he is basically raising. Throw in a recurring concussion... wow major shocker he needs to move back home.

Kates was a career loafer who wouldn't have seen the field even if Lloyd and his softies were coaching still

Babb was kicked off the team because he repeatedly broke team rules.

Horn had no place in the new offense so it's smart for him to transfer.

Butler is a career penalty machine, dog house resident and under achiever who was switched from TE to DE in his 4th season - if that doesn't put the writing on the dorm room wall I don't know what will.

Then we have Artis Chambers... a guy we certainly had high hopes for when we recruited him out of Indiana. A high school QB and safety, He quickly found out that he didn't really have a position - too slow for Safety (and at Michigan, that's really saying something) and too small and/or unwilling to play linebacker. So... disappointing that it didn't work out, but there has to be desire on the part of the player and I'm not sure we saw any of that.

Also, as has been pointed out above, this junk's been common knowledge for weeks, it's just official now. But... this is the Detroit Free Press we're talking about.

December 13, 2008  01:02 PM ET

Why do so many express that Michigan needed "rebuilding"? Has everyone forgotten what they did to Florida? Michigan is, was not, and will never be WVA. IT DID NOT NEED REBUILDING! Just a really good coach that measured up to carry on with the program's success. But while the vast majority of schools including big ones - bring back one of their own, or someone from the 'neighborhood' - i.e. from the region or another conference school, Michigan is proving, like ND, that wishful thinking is just that. But then, again, you need someone at the top who knows what's going on beyond "stadium improvements."

December 13, 2008  01:35 PM ET

Was Lloyd doing a bad enough job to make the negative press, RR's buyout and contact, the '08 season and whatever else will follow worth it? Talk about a lousy investment. Think about how many games RR has to win for Michigan to break even.

I love how some of you write off McGuffie. Wasn't he your top '08 recruit and a Youtube sesenation? He's a freshman and will be a great player.

December 13, 2008  01:36 PM ET

Michigan is going to be the Big Tens Bichigan.

December 13, 2008  01:37 PM ET

RR's spread won't save you. The rest of the Big Ten already has this offense and they make it work.

Exactly. Those who say the entire football program had to be blown up and rebuilt are crazy. Dick Rod may turn out to be a good coach somewhere but I do not think it will be at Michigan. Bill Martin the AD needs to be put under a microscope. He seems to be able to raise a lot of money but that may start to dwindle when the blue heads finally get disgusted with 8 and 9 loss seasons and no bowl games.

This will be year 2 of cleaning out those who do not believe in the system/vision of the coach. Sometimes a house cleaning is what is needed, more than increasing the talent level. If they can get the remaining players to believe, buy in, and play as a team, they can find some level of success next year (BAMA went through the same thing between yrs 1 and 2 for Saban). If the level of play isn't significantly better next year, Big Blue faithful need to be very concerned.
