Red Sox studying Smoltz

It's surprising John Smoltz is considering teams other than Atlanta for the final year or two of his career. One of the major reasons Smoltz would love Boston is pitching coach John Farrell. Smoltz knows Farrell's reputation, and also loves the atmosphere of Fenway. As a fifth starter, Smoltz could also be a strong influence on Josh Beckett and Jon Lester. The Sox are looking at his medical reports and studying the side session video distributed to teams late last week.

SR is gonna be none too pleased when he finds out the Red Sox have been eyeing his Smoltz.

this would be sweet. but as a starter? i would think he would come from the pen

December 14, 2008  08:26 AM ET

Would Smoltz know how to put on a different Uniform? i mean he has been at Atlanta for 20 years!

December 14, 2008  08:55 AM ET

It could work if they want to use him out of the pen but as a starter doesn't fit. It's like removing Schilling and bringing in Smoltz, two old war horses who have had injury issues the last couple of seasons.

^^^I agree with all of the above. Also, if you're in the playoffs, many times you fail to reach your 5th starter, and you definitely want Smoltz on the bump in the playoffs. I'm an Atlanta fan but after the Braves struck out on Peavy and Burnett, Smoltz deserves to compete the last year of his career.... I think Boston would be a good fit

December 14, 2008  09:31 AM ET

It'd be hard to believe Smoltz would want to go elsewhere at this stage
I doubt the $$ offered by Boston- vs Atl $$ would be appreciably more

December 14, 2008  10:38 AM ET

smoltz is great as a fifth or even in the bullpen if nessaery i would pick him up in a heartbeat

December 14, 2008  10:41 AM ET

he is going to his hometown TIgers... where he will close games for them for the next two years.

Smoltz could give them different options, huh? As a Sox fan, I like this. Smoltz deserves to go out a winner too.

The AL East could be really fun this year.

You know back in college I studied Smoltz too, pretty tough stuff that Smoltz, lots of physics and vectors.

Which is why I switched majors, but judging by today's marketplace I really wished I stuck with it and became a Smoltzologist................

The Red Sox don't know what to do,
Smoltzy, they've got their eye on you.

Typical Theo move; finding value in unlikely places to give the Sox targeted help for a year or two.
Why would Smoltz take it? To win a World Series, which he can't do with Atlanta or Detroit.

he'll be so upset when they get him:))

He's been looking for a reason to become a Red Sox fan...This could just be it! ;)

He would be a great pickup. Great team guy, mentor, and would be a great low risk/high reward signing, unlike the two guys NY just got. 1 yr 10mil with bonus ladien.

I agree, he would be a great 4th or 5th starter and bullpen insurance also.

Smotz is hard to learn.

December 14, 2008  01:18 PM ET

I have been a Braves fan for 40yrs and write this in all sincerity. John Smoltz, IF HEALTHY, will be terrific in Boston. He is the winningest post season pitcher with great attitude, skills and personality. He also does a lot of charity work. I would love to see him become a Red Sox player with a chance to win another WS. He will make Boston much better. Sox fans will not find a better man to cheer for and he will win for them as a starter or closer. Would to God every team had 2 or 3 players like him. Hope you get him Boston as you're my second favorite team.

December 14, 2008  01:47 PM ET

How can you even argue against this move. He's a good starter. He could be used to give Boston a unique 6 man rotation, could be used out of the pen, and would be a wonderful guy, even if not healthy, to mentor Beckett, Lester, Masterson, and Buchholz. What's not to like about it, unless you're a Yanks fan.
