Petty: Why Dodge teams are struggling

09:16 AM ET 12.14 | It has been 55 years since Lee Petty drove a Dodge Diplomat to victory in NASCAR's premier series at a race in West Palm Beach, Fla. That was the first victory at what now is the Sprint Cup Series level for the manufacturer, and it fittingly came with a Petty behind the wheel. With Petty Enterprises in the news this week, and apparently very close to ceasing to exist as NASCAR has known it, there is no diplomatic way to say it: Dodge has become an also-ran when it comes to stacking up against the other three manufacturers who compete at the Cup level. "I think you look at who has been successful [in recent years], and Roush has seven or eight cars he's working with; Hendrick has six or seven that he's been working with; even Gibbs has had some other deals they've been working with," Richard Petty said of the alliances Roush Fenway has with Yates Racing, Hendrick has had with what soon will operate as Stewart-Haas Racing, and Gibbs has enjoyed with other Toyota-backed teams. "It's hard to compete with that. You look at the Dodge teams, and you've got four teams that have been totally independent. We've not thrown our stuff into the middle of the pot, like the other teams have done, and tried to work through things together. Hopefully, we can do that next year."

I think it is Boston Ventures that is looking to get out of Petty Enterprises. Investment firms are into making money but I heard they have lost money on the merger deal with Petty. I see Gillett and Richard merging if Gillett is willing to buyout Boston Ventures.

This is what happens when manufactures aren't allowed to develope thier cars. NASCAR is realizing this is there fault. By trying to tell Gillett that they cant switch to Chevy next year just proves it. Its a piss poor attempt to save the Dodge. Dont believe me? Then ask Ray Everham.

When I was a kid I asked my dad "what the hell is a Studebaker?"
I am pretty sure 10 years from now my kid is going to ask me "Dad, what the hell is a Dodge?"

It looks like Indy car was on the right path after all when they started the cost control 10 years ago. They don't have to worry about the manufactures surviving a bail-out unlike nascar. This just isn't Chrysler, Ford & GM that's in trouble, this is also nascar. And unlike back in the "good old days of nascar racing", there's nothing they can manipulate to win this battle.

I think NASCAR has got it's finger way to deep into the race teams. In trying to insure that the manufacturers have equal representation and can be competitive they are handicapping the smaller teams. Maybe NASCAR needs to take a better look at the situation and see what alliances will stabilize the weaker teams and keep them racing. If Dodge cannot support its race teams, maybe it is time to get out. This would not be the first time that manufacturer has pulled the plug on NASCAR.

you are right, Boson Ventures was only looking to make some quick money with this deal and when they found out it was a money hole, they quickly got out.

Friction Burns -- Totally agree ... TRASHCAR has had a problem with MOPAR for a long, long, time -- I am not dating myself but wasn't it TRASHCAR that canned the Hemi, canned the Super Bird and Daytona, now won't let them use their new motor even though it is a Chevy copy? Somethin' or somebody is really stickin' Bill France's handy work....
