La Russa stumps for McGwire as Hall of Famer
Given the chance to celebrate and comment on Rickey Henderson's appearance on the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time, St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa also seized the opportunity to stump for another dynamo member of his Oakland Athletics teams who will be on the ballot. On his third try, Mark McGwire belongs in the Hall of Fame, La Russa believes. It's a matter a of "integrity." "This steroid issue, that's a matter of integrity, right" La Russa said. "That's one way to describe it, right? Well, it occurred to me, I know that I've never spoken much about it at all, but this guy did something that screams integrity. How many guys do we know that had a contract like he had? He had a contract in his hand for $15 million over two years, and he walked away from it because he didn't feel like he could play to that level. That, to me, there's a certain integrity for the sport, for self-respect and everything." La Russa is referencing a story that is well-known in St. Louis. After the 2001 season, a disappointing one for the slugger, McGwire retired and, as Bernie Miklasz put in a column around that time, "handed a guaranteed $30 million contract back to the Cardinals."

he walked away because he knew he'd be **** in a cup with regularity. im no fan of mcgwire, but baseball is what it is, they knew a high percentage of players were on the juice and did nothing about it, cant fault mcwire for performing at the level he performed at. i could care less if he's in there or not. baseball created this monster

He was too much of a coward to testify about anything. He walked away from the game to avoid the questions not because of integrity. He cheated and as such shouldn't go in the HOF.

This should get interesting. Who can resist a chance to bash McGwire and LaRussa?

Of course LaRussa is going to stump for McGwire. Steroids have followed LaRussa where ever he's coached. He owes his career to juiced up players.
LaRussa should just leave it alone. He's getting too stressed out. He should just have a few more drinks and drive home.

Might as well throw Jose Canseco in the HOF also. Big deal if he handed back the contract. Why don't we ever see McGwire out there saying he's innocent of taking steriods? Where is he? Oh let me think...maybe because he did take them and doesn't deserve to be in the HOF or have his named mentioned with any of the other greats who played the game with integrity!!!!!

Any player who we know used steroids should only get into the Hall if they purchase a ticket. That goes for Bonds, Sosa, Palmeiro. Of course, it's a bit unfair as I'm sure there are others who used them and have not been caught, such as Pudge Rodrequez. That's life, not all criminals are behind bars either. It would be more unfair to the players who did it the right way, like Maddux and Mussina, or to borderline guys who if they did use them might have made the Hall, like Mattingly or Dawson. No way, no how should any cheater be elected to the HOF, not now, not ever. +

LaRussa is a clubhouse dork who puts family in the back burner for the chance to sniff major league jockstraps every day.
I lost all respect for him when I read this. LaRussa belongs in the Teabagger Hall of Shame for continuing to support this steroid puppy.

I was thinking the same thing. Does anyone know if LaRussa had been drinking heavily when he gave these answers? Heck, he must have been drunk since the seasons over and he drinks a lot during the off season.

The truth is his fingers were getting so big from loading up on all the steroids that he could not hold a pen to endorse the checks anymore. That was the reason he walked away from the contract....

The question is in my mind ,"Is this guy a hall of famer without the roids?"
In Bonds' case yes. I hate to say it. No one vote for him the first time around for being a lying tool and then let him in.
Clemens - Multiple Cy Youngs before the roids so yes. <I just puked a little in my mouth>
Canseco - No. No roids and he was not good enough and he didn't even get to 500 HR's.
McGuire - Without roids I doubt he would have been healthy enough to reach 500 much less 600 so I have to go with no.

Yes he should be in. He played in a time when you could take roids. In every sport rules change as the game goes along. Roids are illegal now so anyone who take it will be banned. Sorry but trying to hang someone today for what they did yesterday when it was not banned is crazy. We don't have to like it but that is the way it is.
